TOP FOUR LOCKED UP

There’s still eight weeks to go but is the Premier A top-four already decided? St Kevins 46-point win over Old Xaverians sees SKOBs move two games clear in fourth place and in the box seat for finals. Pat Kerr booted four goals, while Josh Wallis was best-on-ground with three majors and Mitch Wallis booted two. The result sees St Kevins move level with Old Scotch, just a game behind Collegians and Uni Blues at the top of the ladder. Old Xavs falls to a 5-5 record, level with Old Brighton with both facing an uphill task to break into the top-four.

HAILEYBURY WATERS DOWN SCOTCH

Old Haileybury is having a big week on and off the field. It started on Saturday when the ninth-placed Hearts and Bloods knocked off ladder-leader Old Scotch in a massive boilover. Haileybury kept Scotch goalless in the first half to take a 17-point lead at the main break and held on for a famous win. Old Scotch will rue woeful inaccuracy in front of goal, despite having five more scoring shots, going down 6.8 (44) to 3.16 (34). Durras Seccull, Jack Bell and Lachlan Riley impressed for the victors.

HERE COMES WILLIAMSTOWN CYMS

A resurgent Williamstown CYMS made it three wins on the bounce in Premier B when it upset third-placed Beaumaris by 21 points, 11.6 (72) to 6.15 (51), at Fearon Reserve. The home side kicked the opening seven goals of the game to hurry to a 39-point lead at quarter-time. Brad Tucker capped a best-on-ground display with a goal, while Oskar Manton, Daly Andrews and Luke Fava were also influential.

SNOWDOGS WIN TOP-FOUR BATTLE

St Bernard made it a perfect 10 from 10 with a spirited eight-point win over third-placed De La Salle at Waverley Oval. The Snowdogs went goalless in the first quarter, kicking 0.5, conceding a 15-point lead to De La but were level at half-time and ran out 5.13 (43) to 5.5 (35) winners. Jordan Farrell was named best afield, while Matt Sauro, Luca Alessio and Luke Di Lizio were also influential.

WELLERS PULL HOUDINI ACT … AGAIN!

Ladder-leader Old Camberwell Grammarians has come from the clouds for a second consecutive week to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, sinking third-placed PEGS by 11 points. The Wellers trailed by 36 points at quarter-time and had just one goal to their name at three-quarter-time – going goalless in the opening and third terms. However, they stormed home with a 6.2 to 0.1 last quarter to overturn a 26-point deficit and pinch victory. The result follows a scare from last-placed Marcellin the previous round, with the Wellers recording an eight-point come-from-behind win. Riley Verbi proved the hero with five majors for the Wellers on Saturday in a best-afield performance.

BULLANTS ON THE BOARD

Preston Bullants got off the mark with a memorable win over Therry Penola at Ruthven Reserve. The Lions, previously 5-4, led at the final change to only be denied by the fast-finishing Bullants. The hosts kicked four goals to one in the final term to run away 11.10 (76) to 8.11 (59) victors. Conor Howard booted three goals while Hugo Byron was best afield. The win now sees the Ants percentage ahead of Ivanhoe. Elsewhere, UHS-VU defeated Ivanhoe, Prahran outran West Brunswick, Oakleigh defeated Old Peninsula and Kew lost to Glen Eira. Glen Eira remains two wins ahead of the next best side atop the ladder.

SECOND QUARTER TO REMEMBER

If Parkside finishes on top of the Division 2 ladder at the end of the home-and-away season, it might have a lot to do with its second quarter on Saturday. The Devils booted 10 goals to one, on the back of a strong breeze, to set up a dominant 18.6 (114) to 7.7 (49) victory over fellow finals contender Brunswick. Ben Radford was dominant in front of goal with five majors while Corey McKay booted three in a best-on-ground display.

ELSTERNWICK GETS AN EDGE

A Division 3 top-of-the-ladder clash saw Elsternwick prevail 9.11 (65) to 8.9 (57) over Canterbury. It was just Canterbury’s second loss of the season with the Cobras now only ahead of Elsternwick on percentage. Both sides have an 8-2 record. Elsewhere in the division, third placed Hawthorn showcased the gap between the top four and bottom four with a 138-point thumping of Power House, who sits fifth.

GAME OF THE YEAR IN DIVISION 4

North Brunswick remained without defeat in Division 4 but only just after Box Hill North came from behind to secure a share of the spoils. The two sides couldn’t be separated, kicking 8.12 (60) apiece. Michael Trkulja and Jake Horwood kicked three goals each for Box Hill North and North Brunswick respectively.
