A brave Geelong United Supercats women’s team has completed a dominant 2-0 weekend after the sudden passing of assistant coach Nick Forde.

It was an emotional weekend for the Geelong United Supercats women’s team, as they rallied together after the sudden passing of assistant coach Nick Forde.

An 82-47 win over the Knox Raiders at the Geelong Arena on Saturday night set the tone for a 2-0 weekend, the team finishing the job off on Sunday afternoon with a 77-66 defeat of Keilor Thunder on the road.

An even spread of scoring on Saturday night saw four players in double figures in the win against Knox, Sarah Elsworthy leading the way with 22 points to go with eight rebounds and five steals.

Chantel Horvat also notched another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Horvat backed it up a day later with another 25 points and nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, the Supercats men dropped both games in their double header weekend, with a disappointing second quarter at home on Saturday night setting up a 79-97 loss against the Knox Raiders.

After starting Saturday’s game strongly and taking a three-point lead at quarter time, a 17-34 second period swung momentum the Raiders’ way, with the Supercats never able to get back into the game.

George Blagojevic led the scoring for the Supercats with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Sunday afternoon saw a closer contest against the Keilor Thunder.

A three-pointer from Gabe Hadley tied the scores up with 20 seconds remaining, before a pair of made free throws from Keilor gave them the lead back with six seconds left.

Geelong was unable to force a second overtime, going down 104-106. Hadley finished with 29 points, while Blagojevic added 20 points and 15 rebounds.

The teams will take a break next week, returning to the Geelong Arena on Saturday June 17.
