AVONDALE FC took another step on its path from mid-range state league side to national prominence with a 5-0 rout of FC Bulleen Lions in FFA Cup qualifying on Tuesday.
Then known as Avondale Heights, the club finished second in State League 2 North-West as recently as 2013.
It has since emerged as one of Victoria’s top clubs and is eyeing a maiden National Premier League title after moving four points clear at the summit alongside Bentleigh Greens.
The Avengers are two wins away from competing on the national stage of the FFA Cup after blitzing FC Bulleen Lions at David Barro Stadium.
Elvis Kamsoba scored a 30-minute hat-trick for Avondale, while Yitay Towns and Kaine Sheppard also found the back of the net in a dominant performance.
Kamsoba was undoubtedly the star, opening the scoring after 24 minutes when he beat the offside trap and sprinted down the left wing before burying a cool finish.
The winger was causing havoc and his second goal was worthy of a spot on any highlights reel, as he beat three defenders and curled in a strike from outside the penalty box.
A lobbed finish completed his hat-trick, with a sprawling defensive effort from FC Bulleen not enough to prevent the shot from crossing the line.
State League 1 North-West leader North Sunshine Eagles awaits Avondale FC in the next rounds.
Only four Victorian teams will qualify for the Round of 32, with 16 still in contention.
Four NPL sides were successful on Tuesday as Bentleigh Greens survived a scare from St Kilda to prevail 3-2, Kingston City downed Manningham United 3-1 and Oakleigh Cannons hammered Sydenham Park 6-0.
Seven NPL top-flight sides, five NPL2 teams and four state league clubs remain in the race to earn a spot on the national stage of the FFA Cup.
