Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association rep coach Dain Howe says the association will field its strongest team in years as it sets about the annual Country Week competition later this month.

The Gully will be part of the Provincial White competition and will take on Mornington Peninsula, Traralgon and District and Bendigo.

“It’s stronger than the one we had last year, with the inclusion of Nathan Walsh. I reckon we’ve got every chance to go one better than last year,” he said.

“We’re pretty bullish about it.”

Last summer, Ferntree Gully reached the semi-finals only to bow out at the hands of the Geelong Cricket Association, which then went on to beat the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association in the grand final.

Ferntree Gully had beaten the MPCA in the opening round.

Howe is confident he has a very strong squad at his disposal.

Walsh is fresh off making the All-Australian side after the national country championships in Queensland while Belgrave’s Aaron Brunner cracked three tons on the trot to start the summer and players like Pete Dunlop (Knox Gardens), Blake Walter The Basin), Steve Devenish (Johnson Park), Zac Wilson (Knoxfield), Jayden Bradbury (Ferntree Gully) and Cameron Wheeler (Upwey) have experience to burn.

Meanwhile, newcomers Mitch Ley (Johnson Park), Jurgen Andersen (Eildon Park) and Joey Hawke (The Basin) will be champing at the bit to have a crack at this level.
