East Doncaster’s already-daunting batting line-up is set for another boost with the signing of recently-retired Fitzroy Doncaster legend Peter Dickson.
Dickson called time on a glittering Premier Cricket career at the end of the summer, a season that saw him log his 10,000th career run and snare his 200th wicket.
The ex-Lions skipper and premiership star said the chance to play Dunstan Shield came at the perfect time and lining-up with East Doncaster would reunite him with longtime teammate and friend Matt Bremner.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “I know the club pretty well, I’ve had a bit to do coaching the juniors down there.”
And he said the abundant talent in the ECA’s top turf grade would provide plenty of challenges.
“I dropped in and watched some of the (East Doncaster) semi-final against North Balwyn,” he said. “The competition was really good, there was a lot of very good players.”
Dickson said increasing work commitments and the demands on a player at Premier Cricket level became a bit too much and he was looking forward to playing suburban cricket.
“There are later starts in ECA than Premier and it’s a better fit for me in life,” he said. “And there’s a lot of guys similar age to me at the club. At Fitzroy Doncaster, I reckon I was 15 years older than the next guy in the team.
“I’m looking forward to helping out the younger players and to be reunited with Matty Bremner.
“I’ve watched him grow since he was a cheeky 15-year-old into a grown man and a father. It’s going to be great to play with him again.”

LIONS GREAT CALLS STUMPS ON CAREER
Dickson boosts a batting line-up that was, arguably, the strongest in the competition last summer — Bremner making 288 runs, Matthew Vaiano 368, Joe Kendall 651 and Rob Sayer 358 in the top five.
“It’s a really strong side,” he said. “They won the flag two seasons ago and were beaten by North Balwyn in the semi this year. They’ve had a couple of really good years.”
With Dickson joining the fray, the first East Doncaster v Canterbury clash next summer now becomes something of a Fitzroy-Doncaster reunion with Bremner and Dickson taking on the newball team of Steven Duckworth and Chris Moore.
And Dickson expects no favours from his former Lions teammates, laughing that they used to get him out in the nets a fair bit.
