NEW RECRUIT STARS IN FIVE-RUN NAIL-BITER

St Kilda recruit Will Fraser-Smith lived up to expectations on Saturday, delivering a match-winning performance as South Caulfield edged Murrumbeena by five runs in a Championship Division thriller.

The fast bowler claimed 4-36, taking crucial late wickets to deny the visitors victory in a tense finish.

After South Caulfield posted 8-199, built on Brad Erasmus’ 54 and Lewis Mildenhall’s 42, Murrumbeena appeared destined for victory as star batsman Tej Gandhi (60) and captain Andrew Humphries (46) controlled the chase.

However, Fraser-Smith struck when it mattered most, dismissing Alexander Ross (25) and Xavier Ross (16) to break Murrumbeena’s momentum. The visitors finished at 8-194, falling agonisingly short.

Gandhi’s impressive all-round display included 3-39 with the ball, taking his season tally to 20 wickets.

MVP MAGIC: SONCZAK SEALS VICTORY

Matt Sonczak reminded everyone why he’s the reigning MVP with a match-winning all-round display for St Brigid’s St Louis against Beaumaris on Saturday. The star produced an unbeaten 59 off 85 deliveries before claiming 4-23 off eight overs to seal victory.

Bradley Sylvester contributed a fluent 63 off 69 balls while Jeremy Heys smashed 40 off 33 as St Brigid’s St Louis reached 5-202 off 38 overs. Sonczak then led the bowling attack, combining with Sumeth Premathilaka (2-32) to bowl out Beaumaris for 149 in the 35th over.

TIGERS HOLD OFF BLOODHOUNDS

Mentone’s ladder dominance continued as they defeated Mordialloc to remain two games clear on top. Dane Heverin’s 56 and Comrey Edgeworth’s 54 anchored an 80-run stand that lifted the Tigers from 2-24 to 3-114, eventually posting 9-262 off their 40 overs. Mordialloc had a dip in reply, with Damith Mapa (53 retired not out), JackPlom (41) Kalugaga Yoshan kumara (31) and Jakob Woinarski (48 off 26 balls) raising hopes but the Bloodhounds finished 9-223. Mentone seamer Darcy Brown took 3-74 and Ed McGarry 2-42.

KENT IMPORT SMASHES FIVE SIXES

UK import Seb Allison showed what a powerful middle-order batter he is with a match-winning 71 off 41 balls — including five massive sixes — in Dingley’s win over Bonbeach. The Kent all-rounder then nabbed 2-33 as the Dingoes, defending 7-172, kept Bonbeach to 6-162. Seamer Dyllan Andrews also delivered a key spell, taking 3-22.

DIVISION 1

BENTLEIGH CRUISE TO VICTORY

Bentleigh continued its strong start to the season after cruising to a nine-wicket win over Aspendale.

The Demons restricted Aspendale to 136 from 38.1 overs and smashed their way to 1-140 in just 24.2 overs in reply.

Ben Seabrook carried his bat in the win with an unbeaten 73 that included 11 fours and a six, while Abhilash Sharma finished 38 not out. Luke Mott led the way with the ball meanwhile and took 4-34 from 8 overs.

O’BRIEN’S STELLAR FORM CONTINUES

McKinnon held on for a narrow 12-run win over South Caulfield in a close encounter.

Ryan O’Brien continued his fine stretch of form at the top of the order for McKinnon with his third half century in four games — including a score of 131.

O’Brien worked his way to 75 on Saturday as McKinnon posted 9-170, with South Caulfield managing 5-158 in reply. O’Brien was also the pick on McKinnon’s bowlers after taking 2-18 in 8 overs.

WILLIAMSON, GOULD BOWL BRIGHTON DISTRICT TO VICTORY

After a barnstorming season with the ball in Division 2, Tom Williamson has made it back-to-back four-wicket hauls to kick off his Division 1 campaign as Brighton District skittled Hampton for 89 in a 48-run victory.

Williamson took 4-21 from his 8 overs, while Paul Gould was near unplayed with an astounding 4-6 from 8 overs as the pair bowled Brighton District to victory as they defended 9-137.

The match between Carnegie and Parkdale United was washed out.
