A budding young cricketer from Coburg will get a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience at the Big Bash League final tonight.
Rasika Ziva Syan has been named in Cricket Australia’s Cricket Blast First XI, earning her a call-up to the final between Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder at Bellerive Oval.
Syan, 8, is one of 11 youngsters nominated and has a chance to be crowned Cricket Blaster of the Year.
The Coburg Cricket Club junior was nominated after showcasing her love of the game and being a good role model for her teammates.
“I’m really excited to watch the final,” Rasika said.
“I love batting and bowling and making new friends.
“Coburg is a good club.”
Rasika’s brother Samuel, who plays Premier Cricket Under-18s for Greenvale Kangaroos, coaches her under-10 team.
Rasika’s father Sunny said his daughter just loved watching and learning.
“She loves her batting and she helps out at the Blasters, she gets there early to help set up, she is pretty keen to learn.
“She watches it all the time on TV.”
Much like the AFL Grand Final, the Cricket Blast First XI are expected to present the winning team with medals after the game.
Rasika’s nomination detailed her teamwork, saying ‘Rasika is also seen as a good role model around the club, most notably recently giving her second bat to another keen player who didn’t have any equipment.”
Rasika is one of two selected from Victoria with Sam Harman from Vermont South also earning a nomination.
