India down Aussies to take 2-0 lead

It was a Saturday-Sunday double-header this weekend in the VSDCA North-West group.

While the whether wasn’t kind, we still saw plenty of highlights from across the round.

There were big runs, steadying wins, bundles of wickets – including a hat-trick – and some brilliant solo performances.

Check out all the major talking points and our Team of the Week below.

YATES TEARS THROUGH COBURG

Adam Yates had quite the weekend for Altona. He ripped through Coburg with 7-24 on Saturday afternoon to have the home side all out for 152. Then, instead of putting his feet up, he was at the crease early as Altona’s openers fell cheaply. He went onto score 59 runs from 116 balls to play a key role in getting his side across the line.

KETT, ADAMS DELIVER FOR SNOWDOGS

Former Fitzroy-Doncaster man Jevon Kett was St Bernard’s big off-season acquisition and he finally found his rhythm on the weekend. Kett had only scored more than 14 once this season but exploded against Strathmore, smashing 71. James Davey added an invaluable 55 from 75 balls late as the Snowdogs posted 238. Ken Pennyfeather was Strathmore’s best with the ball, taking 4-42. In response, the Mores were 2-25 when Kyle Adams removed Justin Bramble and Tom Ingleton to be on a hat-trick. Owen Thompson (50) and Luke Bassi (46) put on an 82-run sixth-wicket stand but it wasn’t enough as the visitors were all out 201. Adams finished with 5-52.

BURTON THE DIFFERENCE FOR WERRIBEE

Werribee star Jonathan Burton was in some sort of form at the weekend. He produced a stunning bowling display of 7-52 for the Tigers as they ran out six-wicket winners against Williamstown. His effort helped reduce Williamstown to just 150 on Saturday before the visitors finished the job led by Shaun Dean’s unbeaten 68.

BLACK, COLE SAVE BATS

Plenty Valley salvaged a draw against Brunswick at AG Gillon Oval in a nail-biting finish. The Bats reached stumps 8-95, well short of the Wicks’ 190, but still earned a valuable three points. After sending Brunswick in, captain Simon Black was super with the ball and finished with 6-66. At the top of the order, Ben Rowles was the Wicks’ best bat, scoring 69, while Jackson Cooper added 32 and skipper Simon Hill scored 37. In reply, Plenty Valley were in serious trouble at 6-42 as Dan Houghton ripped through the top order. However, Alex Cole was a rock for the visitors, finishing unbeaten on 20 from an incredible 161 balls. Dilawar Ali scored 26. Houghton finished with 5-33.

SPOTSWOOD CLINCIAL AGAINST PRESTON

Spotswood arguably couldn’t have done much more right in its win against Preston. After being sent into the field, the reigning premier rolled their opponents for 114 as Sam Hope led the way with 3-29. When it came their time to bat, opener Taylor Tatterson enjoyed the conditions on his way to a century before Spotty eventually declared at 4-257. Preston’s second dig was better as they reached 4-136 before the close of play.

PLAYHQ ERROR HIDES KEW OUTRIGHT, CARROLL HAT-TRICK

If you looked at PlayHQ on Sunday night, as we did admittedly, you’d think Kew beat Yarraville on first innings points and that was that. However, you’d be wrong. Kew claimed a dominant outright victory at Yarraville Oval on Sunday. The Blues took a 78-run lead on the first innings (193 to 115), thanks to Sam Pearce’s 61 and coach Seb Contos’ 41. PlayHQ has Yarraville 3-49 in the second innings but it was, in fact, skittled for 104 as Jack Carroll took a hat-trick and finished with superb figures of 6-26. Ashish Mathew made 57 for the Eagles. The hosts were 4-73 when Carroll struck, removing Senad Jahic, Harry McAleer and Aditya Barot to claim the club’s second hat-trick in three matches, following Pearce’s hatty against Melton. Needing 26 for victory, Contos (20no) and Jack Stewart (5no) wrapped up a 10-wicket triumph.
