Check out all the weekend’s highlights below.
COBURG CRUSH
Talk about stunning upsets. Not only is Coburg knocking off Kew a surprise, the magnitude of the win is doubly so. The Lions put the ladder-leader to the sword at Victoria Park, recording a resounding seven-wicket win. Winning the toss and sending the home team in, Coburg dismantled Kew, skittling the Blues for just 78. Aaron Shellie continued his outstanding form with 5-22, while Jack Carroll was the top-scorer with 42 from 40 balls – a staggering 53 per cent of his team’s total. Shellie couldn’t back up his bowling performance with the bat, out for a duck – another surprise – before Aaron Ayre (26) and Shane Lee (31 not out) got the majority of the runs. The result cost Kew the minor premiership but it will still get a home final against Hoppers Crossing, finishing third.
ALTONA COMES UP CLUTCH
Altona simply had to take care of business against rivals Williamstown to lock away its finals spot and they did. Led by Connor Brown (64 off 114) and skipper James Grubb (89 off 93), the A’s posted 6-221 after being sent into bat. Willi eventually fell short despite a spirited knock from opener Cameron Daltera (84 off 103). A mini collapse of 3-2 proved pivotal in the run case.
HOPPERS’ OMINOUS MESSAGE
Hoppers Crossing saved one of its best performances of the season until the final run with a dominant 96-run win over Werribee. Sanka Abeyruwan produced his best knock of the season with 80 off 90 balls to guide the Cats to 7-204 from their 45 overs. Werribee was rolled for just 108 as Brett Smith and Fawad Ahmed took three wickets apiece. The Tigers were missing a couple of key players including captain-coach Tim O’Brien. The result saw Hoppers finish fourth and Werribee fifth.
PRESTON WIN NOT ENOUGH
The Bullants needed some help from Williamstown but didn’t get it, meaning their 47-run win over Melton was in vain. After being in the top-six for much of the season, Preston finished seventh – six points out of finals. Vaib Deshpande finished his outstanding season strongly, top-scoring with 81. Greg Maratos (36), Darcy Hunter (31) and Marcus Murphy (39) then made strong contributions in the 232 all out. The Bullants spinners then gave Melton plenty of headaches as Ameya Gharat (4-29) and Mahesh Kodamullage (3-34) run through the visitors’ order. Alex Kerr played a lone hand for the Lions, scoring a match-high 84. Rhys Berry (3-41) and Dylan Jobson (3-59) were the pick of Melton’s bowlers.
MARTIGNAGO A MAN IN FORM
Jarrod Martignago will enter the season as one of the competition’s most in-form batsmen after hitting an unbeaten 106 as Spotswood beat Plenty Valley. Spotswood comfortably chased down its target of 189 with just under eight overs remaining.
TAYLORS LAKES END ON A HIGH
In Aamir Raza’s first season as coach, Taylors Lakes finished 11th with a record of seven wins and eight losses. They ended the year on a high on Saturday with a six-wicket win over Strathmore as Nilan Fernando impressed with an unbeaten 68 in the run chase.
SNOWDOGS ON TOP
For the first time in the club’s Subbies history, St Bernard’s is minor premier. A 68-run win over Yarraville at Yarraville, combined with Kew’s shock loss, elevated to the Snowdogs to top spot and locked in a final against sixth-placed Altona. Jevon Kett belted a high-score 75 from 102 balls, while Nish Perera (44) and Tristan Kassis (36 not out) also made key contributions, as the home side posted 7-229. In response the home team was quickly in trouble at 2-28, then 5-58, before being dismissed for 161. Ashish Mathew impressed with 3-34 and then a fighting 38. Jack Noble top-scored for the Eagles with 41 not out. Peter Clark led the way for St Bernard’s with 3-18.
