Casey Cardinia cricket: Pakenham spinner Jason Williams captures 8-47 against Devon Meadows

A former wicketkeeper unleashed a spectacular bowling spell while twin tons, a double century partnership and two 300-run totals capped a gigantic day for Pakenham.

He says he didn’t bowl well, but the scorebook suggests otherwise.

Pakenham off-spinner Jason Williams took 8-47 off 20.5 overs on Saturday to trigger a stunning turnaround in the CCCA Premier match against Devon Meadows.

Devon was humming along at 1-82 before 37-year-old Williams turned the game on its head.

He took eight of the next nine wickets to rout Devon Meadows for 160 in the 66th over.

In reply, Pakenham reached 0-27 by stumps.

A humble Williams played down the performance, praising his young teammates for their contribution.

“It’s probably not the best day I’ve had actually,” he said.

“I’ve definitely bowled better…I kind of just got lucky.

“But you take them when they come.

“A lot of thanks goes to the young boys who were bowling at the other end, Marcus Martini and Jordan Seers, who were tying up the other end so batters were trying to attack me a bit more. It allowed me to take the wickets.”

Williams was a wicketkeeper before making the switch to spin bowling about a decade ago.

“I didn’t start bowling spin until mid 20s,’’ he said.

“It was pretty much after 30 that I started working out what I’m doing. I came from turf, played a bit at Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills and I kept a bit there...when I came back to Pakenham we had a keeper so I didn’t have to do it any more basically. And it worked out that I could tie up an end bowling and I worked on it from there.’’

Williams said the experience and advice of teammates Rob Elston and Dom Paynter had helped him.

“They’re pretty handy guys to have in my corner and to tell you what to do, they set fields for you. I just bowl,’’ he said.

Pakenham president Phil Anning said Williams was “the most underrated cricketer in the competition’’.

“He’s alwas been a high wicket taker at club and association level…he goes and represents the association at Country Week all the time,’’ he said.

“He is an underrated cricketer when you have comparisons at our club, you’re talking Dale Tormey, Chris Smith and Robbie Elston, he drifts into the background a bit but he’s as important to our side as those other three blokes are.

“He’s a leader and well respected, I can’t speak more highly of him.’’
