Clinical.
Cardinia claimed back-to-back CCCA Twenty20 premierships with a resounding 37-run win over Koo Wee Rup in the grand final at Pakenham on Sunday.
The Bulls batted first and put up 7-161, with opener Alex Nooy blitzing 71 before being run out in a mix up.
In reply, Koo Wee Rup lost champion batsman Chris Bright for a duck second ball, bowled by Travis Campbell, and was restricted to 7-124.
“We were pretty clinical yesterday,” Cardinia’s Jake Prosser said.
Prosser, the Bulls regular captain, went into the game with a hand injury and didn’t bat or bowl — and handed the captaincy to Nathan Volpe.
“He did a good job considering Twenty20 isn’t the easiest thing to captain,” Prosser said of Volpe.
Cardinia made an explosive start, with Nooy and Morteza Ali (28) powering the Bulls to 0-61 off six overs.
After 10 overs, they were 1-91…and on their way to a big score.
“The start set up our score,” Prosser said.
“We probably lost our way a little but through those middle overs but I think in local cricket that happens pretty regularly.”
With the ball, the two Travs, Campbell (2-18) and Wheller (2-13), bowled superbly, snuffing out the Demons’ winning hopes.
Prosser said Koo Wee Rup loomed as a winning hope in the middle overs before Cardinia struck a vital blow.
“I think they needed eight and a half an over but Travvy Wheller came on and got a wicket and broke a partnership,” he said.
“Luke McMaster made 49…while he was still in they looked as though they could have won it.”
In the District T20 grand final, Cranbourne Meadows marquee player Satnam Singh smashed 7 sixes to propel the Rebels to an emphatic win over Lang Lang.
After Lang Lang was held to 6-105, Singh blasted an unbeaten 76 off 36 balls as Cranbourne Meadows (1-108) rushed to victory in the 11th over.
Singh and opening partner Rohit Sharma (23) put on 85 in quick time, including 18 runs off the opening over.
Pargat Singh (2-14), Mandhiraj Singh (1-23), Rajeev Dhankar (1-18) and Amreek Mann (1-20) took wickets for the Rebels.
