Strathmore is in the box seat to claim the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior Division premiership after taking a first-innings lead in the four-day grand final against Doutta Stars.

The Mores were 8-195 after the first weekend of the decider, a 39-run lead with two days remaining at Buckley Park.

Doutta Stars went to stumps at 8-153 on Saturday but lost their last two wickets for three runs on Sunday to be all out for 156.

After Strathmore made a solid start with the bat, Stars captain-coach Brenton Parchment sparked a mini collapse, taking three quick wickets, to have the visitors 4-64.

However, the Mores were able to steady with Jack Condon (30), Chris Williams (47) and Jack Tate (27 not out) all contributing.

Strathmore captain John Bassi was 15 not out at the close of day two and was satisfied with his team’s position.

“It was a good day for us after a tough battle, they were on top and then we were on top,” Bassi said.

“We’ll bat for as long as we can next week and then stick to our bowling plans that worked in the first innings.”

The Mores shared the wickets on Saturday with four bowlers taking two apiece while Lorenzo Ingram topscored with 40 for Doutta Stars.

Parchment finished with 6-57 and believes his team can rebound this weekend

“It’s not ideal, not where we wanted to be, but there’s still a lot of cricket to be played,” he said.

“The game is theirs to lose, which might work in our favour.

“We didn’t get to the total we wanted but I’ll back us to not make the same mistakes in the second innings.

“We’re usually good at grinding out teams … it will be pretty interesting to see when we get some runs on the board, how they respond.

“We’ve just got to come out next week and trust in our preparations and see where it goes.”

The grand final will resume at 1pm on Saturday.
