Ringwood quick Zak Evans has taken another significant step in his young career, putting pen to paper on his first Big Bash League contract.
The tearaway teen, along with Prahran all-rounder Will Sutherland and Carlton prodigy Mackenzie Harvey, has signed a three-year deal with the Melbourne Renegades.
Evans, a Year 12 student at Xavier College, said he was speechless when he learnt he had been offered a contract.
“I didn’t really know what to say or how to react but mainly just a whole lot of excitement and eagerness to get into it,” he said.

Zak Evans collects maiden Premier Cricket five-wicket haul
The 18-year-old has been earmarked as one of the country’s up-and-coming quicks, capable of hitting the speed gun at 140km/h and producing wicket-taking spells.
He represented Australia at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year and claimed his maiden Premier Cricket five-for last summer.
Evans was a net bowler for the Renegades last summer but was surprised when the phone call came through that a BBL deal was on the table.
“It’s pretty awesome to get in a system like that so young so really looking forward to it,” he said.
“I wanted to get involved with the BBL as soon as possible, obviously being one of the bigger T20 tournaments in the world.
“It’s a big chance to develop my game further and being around a team like the Renegades is special in itself so I’m really looking forward to it.”
Evans has made just 15 appearances for Ringwood in the past two seasons but Premier Cricket batsmen can expect to see a bit more him in 2018-19.
“I’ve finished school cricket at Xavier so I should be able to focus a lot more time on the Ringwood Rams, which I am really looking forward to,” he said.
“I haven’t really had the chance (to do that) so it should be good.”
