INTERNATIONAL  cricket star Jess Cameron will play for Wyndham Vale in the Victorian Women’s Football League this season.

In a recruiting coup for the second-year club, Cameron has crossed from St Kilda Sharks.

Falcons coach Kerry Saunders said Cameron would fill a role in the midfield or forward half.

“She can play a bit,” Saunders said of the club’s major signing.

“I think St Kilda is a little disappointed she’s left there, but she’s pretty much come to play with her sister, Andy, who was the best first-year player in the league last year.

“It’s a family thing and it’s not very often you get the opportunity to play with your sister or brother in a sport.”

Saunders said Cameron was unlikely to be available for finals if the Falcons qualified because of her state and national cricket commitments.

“She’ll be extremely handy at training to help out teaching the youngsters who have never played before,” Saunders said.

In their inaugural season, the Falcons progressed to the second week of the North-West Division 2 finals in 2013.

But the VWFL has been restructured, with Wyndham Vale and 12 other teams to compete in Division 3/4.

The clubs will be split according to ladder position after Round 13, with a finals series to be held in both grades.

“I’m hoping we at least stay in the top half. That’s my first assessment as much as I’d like to say top four again,” Saunders said of her expectations.

“We’ve got the numbers to do it and hopefully we’ve got the players to do it.

“This time last year we were struggling to get players and we were just managing to get by. This year I’m trying to teach them a small game plan and just basic skills.

“Even in the two practice matches and the pre-season we’ve had, they already understand a lot and the basic skills are coming along.”

The Falconshad the bye in Round 1 and will start their campaign against Deer Park at home on Sunday.
