APS Cricket: Caulfield Grammar’s Jez Rigoni and Chris Kellaway take 7-for and make 150 respectively in defeat

It’s not every day a side has someone take a seven-wicket haul, another make 150 and the team still lose. Jez Rigoni and Chris Kellaway’s “remarkable” performances lead a stacked weekend of APS cricket.

Caulfield Grammar Director of Cricket and former Australian cricketing great Sarah Elliott can’t split them.

Rising stars Jez Rigoni and Chris Kellaway both recorded “incredible” individual performances at the weekend’s APS cricket return.

Rigoni jagged 7-79 and Kellaway pummelled 150.

But in more extraordinary circumstances, they were both in a losing cause as Caulfield Grammar failed to chase down Geelong College’s 10-279.

Elliott said she couldn’t pick between the “remarkable” Kellaway or the “relentless” Rigoni.

“The pressure that Chris was batting under, holding his nerve, was pretty remarkable, but then equally Jez when we struggled to take wickets, he was the one standing up,” she said.

“I don’t think they can be split, 7-for, 150 … I don’t know which one I would choose.

“For Chris, his composure at the crease was just incredible and then Jez was similar, he just stacked up, he was relentless in his backing up of each delivery.”

Elliott said the result meant more to the pair, who left the ground disappointed.

“They were pretty disappointed,” she said.

“They actually had their formal straight after, they didn’t have heaps of time to process it, they were speedily into suits and off to year 12 formal.

“They’d be disappointed, we’re a good side and we want to win, it’s not about individual performances, it’s about team performances.

“They’d be flat but there’s plenty to take from it.”

Geelong College captain Edward Bain was as equally impressive in the same match, striking 99 with the bat before capturing 5-89 with the ball.

Elsewhere, Melbourne Grammar’s Frederick Newing too compiled a marathon innings.

Newing made 143 in Melbourne’s reply to St Kevins’ 169.

He shared a 185-run partnership with opener Nick Gillard, who was dismissed just four runs short of a century.

Melbourne Grammar sent St Kevins back in but managed just one wicket in the second innings.

An unbeaten 66 from Freddie Arnhold steered Haileybury College to an extraordinary victory over Brighton Grammar.

Chasing Brighton’s 226, Haileybury was 7-142 before Arnhold and Gurshan Khehra (22no) came together.

The pair guided their side home in the 79th over.

Scotch College, meanwhile, had four batters reach half-centuries when setting Xavier College a large total.

Charlie Smith (61), Ed Winneke (54), Harry Jones (62) and Ned Macmillan (77) all contributed in Scotch’s total of 6-288.

Fionnan Boyle (57) was the only Xavier bat to get going in reply but it was to no avail as they were dismissed for just 176.

Wesley College’s Benjamin Budlender continued the competition trend of centuries by plundering 112 for his side against Carey Grammar.

Despite striking at a solid rate, Budlender only struck eight boundaries.

Wesley posted 6-296 before Carey scored 6-210 in reply.
