It was a historic day for New South Wales Country on the final day of the Under-17 National Cricket Championships in Ballarat.

The team became the first from the area to win the national title after beating Western Australia by six wickets in the final at Eastern Oval.

New South Wales has won before as a combined state but Country had never won the tournament outright.

The closest it got was in 2018/19 when it shared the title with Queensland and the team was combined with the ACT.

It was a spectacular day of cricket for the final day with perfect weather greeting the cricketers.

Below is a wrap of the winners.

DAY FIVE AND SIX REVIEW

A devastating opening 11 overs helped New South Wales Country to claim the final against Western Australia.

After winning the toss and bowling first the decision proved to be a master one as NSW ripped through WA’s top order to have the Sandgropers 3/28 after 11 overs.

Ted Waterman, Blake Mackrell and Kasey Barton each took a wicket.

WA would struggle further after the initial collapse, losing further wickets to be 8/114 and looking unlikely to post a competitive total.

But 93 to Will Malajczuk helped the unbeaten team before the final to post a competitive total of 214 from where the team was early in their innings.

In reply, New South Wales made light work of the total, with Shaun Smith (50), Lachlan Williams (70) and Harry Roscarel (50) all making half centuries to guide the team to the win.

The win ended Western Australia’s unbeaten run in the tournament and was a form reversal to their first match against each other in the tournament when New South Wales Country was bowled out for 46.

In the battle for third, South Australia claimed bronze with a 57-run win over Victoria Metro.

A 132-run stand between Kuwerdeep Singh (69) and Matthew LeRay (72) helped the Croweaters to score 223 from their 50 overs after being 5/85 at one stage.

Victoria Metro got to 2/73 and were on track to win before collapsing to 5/89 and never recovering to be all out for 166.

SA bowler Roman Crawford took three wickets with Victoria’s Archie Flynn making the most runs with 36 for the Big V.

The battle for the other positions happened on day five with teams who finished from fifth to 10th taking on each other for fun on the final day.

New South Wales Metro secured 5th with a five wicket win over Queensland with Victoria Country securing seventh with a thrilling four-run win over the ACT.

Tasmania finished ninth, beating Northern Territory in a one-sided game by eight wickets.

NT was bowled out for 54 before Tasmania made the winning runs in just under 17 overs.

DAY FOUR REVIEW

Finalists were locked in on Tuesday with the final pool games played.

WA ensured it finished the pool stage unbeaten after a comfortable 10-wicket win over Tasmania led by Franklin Stewart Lough’s performance with the ball as he finished with 3-7 to restrict the men from the Apple Isle to just 124.

In response, captain Simon Budge and Adam Solomons both hit half-centuries to get their side across the line.

Meanwhile, Vic Metro got the better of their Country counterparts in a close contest that went down to the final over.

Lincoln Koliba hit an unbeaten century while Ollie Peake continued his brilliant tournament with 73 off 117 balls as Country posted 6-207 from its 50 overs.

Despite no one hitting a half-century in response, Nikki du Toit top scored with 48 off 96, Metro was able to get across the line with four balls remaining.

DAY THREE REVIEW

Vic Metro and Western Australia are only remaining unbeaten teams at the Under-17 National Cricket Championships in Ballarat as the race for the finals heats up.

Alex Turner continued his brilliant tournament for Metro, hitting an unbeaten 51 runs off 75 balls as his side secured a comfortable win over the Northern Territory in a shortened game.

His performance guided the Vics to 2-119 from 24 overs before the NT were bowled out for just 69 with Aryan Sharma the pick of the bowlers with 3-17 from five overs.

WA produced another stunning performance with a 251-run win over South Australia on Sunday led by Zed Hollick’s 110 run stand, while Will Malajczuk will be disappointed to have not reached triple figures after being dismissed for 90.

The pair produced a 178-run partnership to guide their side to 6-340.

South Australia reached 8-89 before play was stopped with Lincoln Hobbs having taken 4-10 for WA.

NSW Metro recorded its second win of the tournament after bowling out Vic Country for 164 in a rain shortened match.

Blake Noorbergen hit an unbeaten half-century while Naden Cooray led the way with the ball taking two wickets.

The ACT recorded their first win of the competition with a convincing win over Tasmania in a game which was also shortened by rain.

Captain Thomas Hogan and Hugh Taylor hit 82 and 81 respectively to help the ACT reach 206 before it was dismissed as Archie Murrell finished with three wickets for Tassie.

When play was stopped, Riley Whitelaw was unbeaten on 26 for Tasmania while Hogan had grabbed two wickets.

In the day’s other game, NSW Country was far too good for Queensland after producing a dominant victory built on Shaun Smith’s 99 and Jaylen Johnston’s 82-run knocks as they hit 304 after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Blake Mackrell tore through the Queensland batting line-up with 5-21.

DAY TWO REVIEW

Three players made their mark with centuries on day two of the Under-17 National Cricket Championships on Friday.

Oliver Peake (Vic Country), Steven Hogan (Queensland) and Simon Budge (WA) all reached triple figures.

Budge and Hogan produced their knocks in the same game with WA eventually prevailing by 35 runs on the back of Budge’s 110 runs off 139 deliveries.

Hogan scored 106 off 132 to lead his side alongside Damon Bass who hit 82 before the middle order collapsed.

Peake’s performance came in Vic Country’s 139-run thumping of Tassie where he led the way with 130 off 141 before Fletch Grimsey-Cook tore through the Tassie line-up with 3-21.

Elsewhere, Vic Metro ran out three-wicket winners over NSW Metro as Cooper Rojko (89 off 101) top scored in the run chase.

John James’ 82 for NSW Metro was equally as impressive while Thomas Paddington finished with 4-38.

South Australia managed a convincing win over the NT as Lachlan Ranaldo starred with the ball taking 4-41 from his 10 overs.

NSW Country was too good for the ACT as Shaun Smith and Kel Wilson both posted half-centuries.

DAY ONE REVIEW

Vic Metro has started its under-17 National Cricket Championships in exciting fashion with a thumping 108-run win over the ACT.

Archie Flynn (124 not out off 120 balls) and captain Alex Turner (111 off 142) set up the victory with a pulsating 210-run partnership which helped guide their side to 3-300 form their 50 overs.

In response, the ACT was all out for 192 led by captain Thomas Hogan’s 55 off 128.

Turner was also influential with the ball finishing with 2-22 while Thomas Paddington and Dylan Walker also finished with two wickets each.

NSW Metro got its own tournament off to the perfect start with a 97-run win over the Northern Territory as Alexander Lee-Young top scored with 53 off 86 as his side posted 9-239.

The Territory were all out for 142 as Manraj Singh Kahlon (4-38) and Hayden McCarthy (3-13) led the way for Metro.

Western Australia produced a powerful bowling display to romp to a massive win over NSW Country.

After being restricted to 197, led by Adam Solomons’ 57 off 76, the team from the west produced a performance with the ball that will take some beating.

NSW Country was all out for 46 with just two players making double figures as Lincoln Hobbs and Wyatt Wilson took three wickets each.

Queensland is off to the perfect start after comfortably chasing down Tasmania’s target inside 31 overs.

Tassie could manage just 9-182 led by Pat Harnwell’s half-century but in the end Michael Neumann (75 off 70) and Steven Hogan (63 off 64) proved decisive in the run chase.

Meanwhile, South Australia won an exciting clash with Vic Country by two wickets in a clash which went down to the wire.

SA had the Vics all out for 168 as Ashton Young (47) and Zane Attard (46 not out) went close to half-centuries while Noah Dunn was the pick of the bowlers with 3-21.

A middle order collapse wasn’t enough to hold off SA as Blake Roberts (25 off 27) proved decisive in the lower order after coming in at 10.

Matthew LeRay finished unbeaten on 49.
