Albion Cats not looking too far ahead after 15-point win over Port Melbourne Colts in WRFL

ALBION recorded its third win of the season with a 15-point win over Port Melbourne Colts in Western Region Football League Division 1 on Saturday.

ALBION recorded its third win of the season with a 15-point victory over Port Melbourne Colts in Western Region Football League Division 1 on Saturday.

The Cats led from start to finish, logging a 15.5 (95) to 12.8 (80) win to improve their record to 3-6 at the halfway point of the season.

The home side led by 19 points at the first break, but the Colts fought back in the second term, getting within a goal at half-time.

After some stern words from coach Aaron Tymms at the main break, the Cats stemmed the flow, winning the quarter before kicking away in the last term.

Tymms said he was pleased with his side’s effort.

“It’s great to get back on the winners’ board,” he said.

“We played well all day and ran out the game pretty well. It was slippery to start with and pretty sticky, but we played to our game plan.”

James Thompson was a standout in his first game as captain.

The win leaves Albion two games out of the top five with nine rounds to go, but Tymms said finals was not on the agenda.

“Mathematically we’re still a chance, but we’re not looking at that, we’re just looking at improving,” Tymms said.

“We’ve got 17 kids who have played under 15 senior games. We’re hoping after 40-50 games they’ll be a lot better, and we hope next year we’re pushing for finals.”

Tymms said the second half of the year was a chance to consolidate and string together some good football.

“When we went to Hoppers Crossing (in Round 6) they blew us out of the water,” he said.

“They’re a younger side than us but they’re well coached. I don’t feel we’re that far behind them.”

The Cats face Altona this Saturday in a chance to seek retribution for its eight-point loss in Round 1.

“We lost the first game, and if we won that, we’d be 4-5 and one game out of the five,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. Our disposal is horrible at the moment. That’s something we need to work on.”

Elsewhere, the Deer Park juggernaut rolled on, despite being challenged by Hoppers Crossing for most of the game. Inaccurate kicking kept the Warriors in the match, but the Lions’ class prevailed, winning 9.18 (72) to 8.10 (58).

In other results, Spotswood touched up Sunshine by 46 points, while St Albans prevailed by 23 points over Altona. And in Division 2, Caroline Springs thumped Sunshine Heights by 58 points while North Sunshine suffered a 139-point loss to North Footscray.
