ABERFELDIE coach Mal Michael has conceded his side is going to “need a bit of luck” if it is to knock off an Avondale Heights outfit taking the Essendon District Football League by storm.
The two sides will meet at Clifton Park on Saturday in what shapes as a blockbuster Premier Division fixture between first and third on the ladder.
The Abers and Heights last met on Anzac Day, Avondale Heights breaking away in the last quarter to score a 58-point triumph.
Michael is hoping for a different result this time but is under no illusions as to the size of the task, with the Heights still unbeaten from 11 outings this year.
“They’re having the perfect season at the moment so we’re going to have to be at our absolute best just to be competitive with them and we’ll need a bit of luck to get over the line,” Michael said.
“Us winning on the weekend is still an option and it’s something that we’re going to be striving for.
“But we’ve just got to make sure we turn up ready to play this time.”
The match comes after an up-and-down few weeks for Aberfeldie.
The side coughed up a 26-point half-time lead to go down to Greenvale by nine points in Round 10 but rebounded to hammer Essendon Doutta Stars by 65 points on Saturday.
It is that lack of consistency, both week-to-week and within games, that has Michael most frustrated, and bridging the gap between the side’s best and worst will be a key focus in the run home.
“On Saturday I said to my players after the game that if we can play to instruction for four quarters, we can get results,” Michael said.
“If not it really depends on how the opposition play and we’re rolling the dice.
“Our good is very good and our bad is poor. We’ve just got to try and bridge that gap and make sure if we do have a slump or a lull in our game it’s not for extended periods and we can change it quickly.”
Luke Davis was a key across half-back for Aberfeldie in the weekend’s win over the Stars while Jack McNamara and Kyle Reimers each kicked three goals up forward.
