“Play.’’

It’s a word Australia’s best indoor cricketers will be happy to hear this Sunday when they return to the national stage for the first time since 2019 in the Indoor Cricket National Championships at Casey Stadium, Cranbourne East.

Over 800 players and officials will take part in the championships from June 25 to July 9, with national titles up for grabs across five open age divisions and five junior divisions.

Big Bash contracted players Sarah Coyte (NSW captain/coach/Melbourne Renegades), Meagan Dixon (Queensland captain/Adelaide Strikers), Clint Hinchliffe (WA/Melbourne Stars) and Tegan McPharlin (SA/Adelaide Strikers) will all be in action at the championships.

Victoria’s men’s side includes first-class all-rounder Clive Rose, his cousin, Richmond paceman Brendan Rose, and emerging Richmond batsman Jonathan D’Rozario.

The open age divisions will commence on Sunday, June 26, with finals to be played on Saturday, July 2.

The junior divisions hit off on Saturday, July 2, with finals on Saturday, July 9.

There is also the Taverners Shield — a division for players with an intellectual disability.

Indoor cricket continues to play a key role in the cricket pathway, with players such as Amanda Jade Wellington, Josh Philippe, Hannah Darlington, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Jhye Richardson and more having played at the Indoor Cricket National Championships in recent years.

2022 promises to be a blockbuster year for indoor cricket, with Australia set to host the 2022 WICF Indoor Cricket World Cup — scheduled to be held in Melbourne from October 8-15.

Four Australian squads will be selected for the World Cup following the championships. Australia has never lost a men’s or women’s world cup since its inception in 1995.

Indoor cricket games are played with eight players on each side, lasting approximately 90 minutes. Every player bats four overs, bowls two overs, and fields in a game.

All finals will be live streamed on the Cricket Australia YouTube channel and Facebook page. Follow the Cricket Australia Indoor Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for all the news, scores and highlights.
