FAMILY functions hosted by Scouts will be a cut above thanks to a converted ride-on lawnmower.
Work for the Dole participants helped transfer the mower into “Tom the Train” as part of a six-month project at Envision Employment Services in Seaford.
Participants built the “train” by stripping down the lawnmower, restoring its engine, brakes and gearbox and building a train body with two carriages.
Scouts Victoria commissioner (campsites) Peter Rutley said the train would be used at fundraising and family events as well as membership drives.
“It’s a fantastic piece of equipment,” he said. “It will be used extensively for the Joey and Cub Scout sections.”
Envision Employment Services manager Sean Teer said Tom the Train would bring joy to children.
Project supervisor Andrew Muir said participants gained valuable skills in restoration and painting as well as obtaining practical skills. Four participants later found employment.
“By participating in this project, jobseekers have learnt the value of punctuality, team work, respect for others, co-operating with supervisors, staff and other participants and practising appropriate dress and attitudes in the workplace,” he said.
Employment services agency MatchWorks provided jobseekers for the project.
