There are just 150 students and buildings dating back to 1907 but that hasn’t stopped this Mornington Peninsula school from coming out on top.

Tyabb Railway Station Primary has recorded the biggest improvement for a primary school in Melbourne’s south with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results increasing by 22.91 per cent over the past five years.

The school, which has just 150 students, beat bigger government and fee-paying schools in the region.

Principal Emma Slater said the results were thrilling and a reflection of the school’s efforts to develop teachers and build strong relationships with families.

She said the school had worked closely with the education department to “unpack NAPLAN data” to identify where the school excelled at and highlight areas for improvement.

“We celebrated our achievements and looked at ways of doing better,” she said.

Crunching the numbers was only the beginning.

“The data helps complete the picture of each student, but it’s the relationships we have with every child and their family that make the difference,” Ms Slater said.

“Each teacher knows the name of every student, not just the ones in their class.

“Parents trust us and the foundations we build with families makes it possible to have difficult or challenging conversations when needed.

“The results flow from those foundations and are reflected across the school, not just in NAPLAN testing in Year 3 and Year 5.”

Other southern schools showing consistent improvement were Carwatha College P-12 at Noble Park which had an increase of 15.95 per cent followed by St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar at Berwick with an increase of 10.23 per cent.

Meanwhile, Oakwood School in Caulfield North recorded the biggest improvement for a secondary school with average year 9 NAPLAN results increasing by 28.09 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.

Yesodei HaTorah College at Elwood was the second best with a 6.12 per cent increase followed by Dromana Secondary College at Dromana with an increase of 5.66 per cent.

The analysis compared the five year change in NAPLAN results from 2017 and 2021 and revealed the schools which have improved their Year 5 and Year 9 student scores the most.

It was calculated by each school’s combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2017 and compared to the same results in 2021.

Yesodei HaTorah College in Elwood recorded the lowest improvement for a primary school with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results returning a result of -7.85 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.

Somerville Secondary College in Somerville recorded the lowest improvement for a secondary school returning a result of -5.41 per cent over the past five years.
