IT won’t go down in the history books but Mornington survived an earthquake on Monday night.
A magnitude 1.6 tremor was recorded in Mornington around 9.25pm, according to Geoscience Australia.
The event was so small that just one person reported it.
“This is a very small earthquake right at the limit of what we can detect,” Geoscience Australia duty seismologist Dr Andrea Thom told the Leader.
“This is clear because we only received one ‘felt’ report — even though its so close to Melbourne ... if it had been larger we would have received a flood of reports.”
Monday’s earthquake was just large enough to make a ‘faint earth noise’ according to the report.
It follows another 2.2 magnitude tremor in Meredith near Geelong on Saturday.
Dr Thom said the region had been very active with up to 450 earthquakes recorded since 1900.
“It’s a quite seismically active area,” she said.
While the SES issued a warning there were no reports of damage.
Dr Thom said peninsula residents and Victorians could expect more tremors as the continent moves northwards at a rate of 7cm a year.
