Tian Sheng then drove into the other vehicle before speeding off and leaving the scene.

The 45-year-old truck cleaning company boss pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to report an accident at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The court heard at around 6.45pm on March 8 this year Sheng, driving a Jeep, pushed in front of the victim’s Toyota Corolla on the Toorak Rd on-ramp of the Monash Freeway.

She beeped her horn, and he then brake-checked her before both got onto the freeway and drove off.

Over the course of the next few minutes he swerved across several lanes towards her car five times, giving her the middle finger as he drove.

Just as they approached the Warrigal Rd turn-off Sheng veered for the sixth time and collided with the front of the victim’s car.

He didn’t stay to exchange details and sped off towards Warrigal Rd.

The woman managed to get her car to her boyfriend’s house and called police.

When Sheng was interviewed he told officers he admitted he gave the middle finger to the woman, but denied purposely swerving towards her.

He said she was “driving fast” and he “had to” take the Warrigal Rd exit and that is when the collision occurred, but didn’t say why he didn’t stop or report the accident to police.

Defence lawyer Ruth Fathers said Sheng had taken responsibility and was remorseful.

She said he had no traffic or criminal priors and this kind of driving was completely out of character for him.

She submitted the “one-off” incident should be penalised with a modest fine, without conviction and with no licence loss.

But Magistrate Andrew Halse said that was not an adequate penalty, and Sheng deserved time off the road to reflect upon how dangerously he had behaved.

“He is extraordinarily lucky a more tragic consequence didn’t eventuate,” Mr Halse said.

“In circumstances where he is driving like a lunatic at speed along the Monash Freeway, consciously trying to hit another car.

“Until a collision has finally occurred, at speed, on a notorious piece of road for accidents.”

He said Sheng’s driving was “appalling”, “outrageous” and “extraordinarily bad”.

He was convicted and fined $400, and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
