Suren Ekanayake fronts court over alleged improper conduct

A Victoria Police officer accused of engaging in an improper and intimate relationship for more than three years will find out in May if he will be committed to trial.

A court is expected to rule in May whether a Victoria Police officer who allegedly engaged in an improper and intimate relationship will be committed to trial.

Suren Llewelyn Ekanayake made a brief appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, charged with two counts of misconduct in public office.

Mr Ekanayake allegedly engaged in an “intimate personal relationship” with an alleged victim between August 2017 and December 2020.

An acting sergeant in Victoria Police’s Southern Region, Mr Ekanayake has also been charged with engaging in an intimate and personal relationship between February and April 2020.

His alleged misconduct is “serious and meriting criminal punishment having regard to the responsibilities of his office”, according to charge sheets obtained by the Herald Sun.

His lawyer sought a two-day committal hearing, saying he intended to cross examine five witnesses.

Mr Ekanayake was remanded on bail to appear for a committal hearing on May 26 and 27.

He was charged on November 21.
