SORRENTO marvel Guy Stringer revealed he delayed surgery on a torn bicep muscle to play his history-making 400th senior game on Saturday.

With his left arm bandaged, the 42-year-old showed his champion qualities by booting five goals in the Sharks’ 195-point win over cellar dweller Tyabb at Bunguyan Reserve.

Stringer’s torn bicep, sustained last week, will be operated on this week — ending his season. But he has no intention of retiring and says he will be “fresh’’ to play on next year.

A rampant Sorrento won 33.18 (216) to 3.3 (21) to remain on track for finals and possibly another flag.

Myles Pitt led Sorrento’s goal blitz with 10 majors and Leigh Poholke slotted seven.

Sorrento’s side included two first gamers — Mitch Towers and Lachie Croad — who weren’t born when Stringer made his debut all those years ago.

Stringer said all the fuss made over his 400th milestone was “lovely’’, albeit overwhelming. He said a speech from Sorrento coach Troy Schwarze before the game meant a lot and was rapt by the respect shown from the Tyabb players, who applauded him off the ground. Stringer said a gathering of both sides in the Tyabb rooms after the game capped off a great day.

“Tyabb were great, they allowed us to have a presentation in the rooms,’’ he said. “I reckon you should always go in and have a drink (with the opposition).’’

Stringer ran on to the ground accompanied by his son Archie and one of his twin daughters, Olivia, but his other daughter Emmison chose to stay out of the limelight. “She had a moment,’’ Guy laughed.

In other games, Hastings snatched third spot from Somerville with a decisive 40-point win in crucial battle between the sides.

The Blues kicked four of the first five goals to jump the Eagles and clear out for a 17.14 (116) to 11.10 (76) win, avenging their Round 5 loss to Somey. Hastings’ best players were Matt Clifford, Paul Rogasch and Dale Alanis, who slotted four goals. Somerville’s best was Tim McGenniss.

Red Hill (8-5) kept its finals hopes alive with an 11-point win over Pearcedale, 6.16 (52) to 6.5 (41). The Hillmen trailed at each change before surging home in the last quarter, inspired by Lachlan Chandler, Jonah Siversen and Daniel McNamara.

A best-on-ground display by Kris Bardon and four goals apiece by Andrew Dean and Adrian Gileno fuelled Rye’s 69-point win over Crib Point. The Demons (8-2) have cemented second spot.

Tom Baker and Keegan Downie booted four goals apiece to spearhead Rosebud’s resounding 41-point win over Dromana. The Buds (10-3) are on top.

A seven-goal first quarter set up Devon Meadows’ 58-point win over Frankston Bombers. Troy Aust (five goals) and Dylan Hand (four) ran hot.

Mornington strengthened its top-three hopes with a stunning come-from-behind win over Pines in Peninsula league on Saturday.

The Bulldogs turned a 44-point quarter-time deficit into a 15-point win, inspired by young forward Jackson Calder, who fired off seven goals, and a dynamic performance by former Dolphin Joel Miller.

After a goal-less opening quarter, Mornington unleashed a nine-goal burst in the second quarter to snatch the lead and drilled nine goals in the last quarter to seal a memorable victory, 20.11 (131) to 18.8 (116), at Eric Bell Reserve.

Shaun White (four goals) tried valiantly for Pines, which has slipped to fifth spot after losing its past two games.

Mt Eliza forward Sam Wettenhall kicked a season-best four goals as the Redlegs consolidated top spot with a comfortable 62-point win over Seaford. James Clayton, Sam Gill and Matt Lillie also played key roles in the win.

Frankston YCW all but ended Langwarrin’s finals hopes with a 74-point win at Lloyd Park. Brenton Credlin, Ash Eames and Scott MacLeod dominated as YC won 17.18 (120) to 6.10 (46). It was the Stonecats’ sixth straight win — and in all them they have scored more than 100 points. Langwarrin is three games out of the five with fives game to go.

Fourth-placed Edi-Asp was made to dig deep to beat Karingal by 77 points. Both sides went goal for goal in the first half before the Eagles took control with a nine-goal third quarter.

Star Edi-Asp midfielder Tim Mannix was best-on-ground in his first game for a month, while Karingal coach Michael Burke (three goals) was gallant.

Bonbeach beat Chelsea for the second time this season. In a match that was tight throughout, the Sharks edged away in the last quarter to win by 17 points. Bonny big man Dylan Jones was best on ground.
