Romain Grenville links with Premier club after leaving Moorabbin

After leading Moorabbin to its first finals campaign in 26 years, Romain Grenville has left the Binners. But he’s landed at a Premier Cricket club.

Moorabbin and its colourful coach and captain Romain Grenville have parted ways.

Grenville last season steered the club to its first Sub-District finals appearance since 1993-94.

But the Binners and the powerful all-rounder have decided to go in different directions.

In Grenville’s case, it’s back to Premier Cricket.

He’s linked with Kingston Hawthorn, which is looking to add experience and leadership to its playing ranks after a wafer-thin 2019-20.

Grenville had stints at Frankston Peninsula and Greenvale Kangaroos before joining Subbies.

He lifted Mt Waverley to its first VSDCA flag but was axed a few games into the 2015-16 season, for reasons that were never made clear.

Grenville popped up at Murrumbeena and joined Moorabbin ahead of 2018-19.

Binners administrator Alan Marion said Grenville left the club on good terms.

“He had a two-year contract and he did exactly what we were looking for in that two years, to make Moorabbin a lot more competitive,’’ Marion said.

“Our club will be better off for the two-year period he had with us.

“He’s a hell of a nice bloke and we certainly wish him all the very best for the future.’’

Moorabbin is on the verge of installing a former international as director of coaching.

The Binners have also appointed a recruiting committee, mindful that overseas pair Karl Carver and Vishva Wijeratne are unlikely to return owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, Kingston Hawthorn has locked in Pete Marshall as assistant/development coach.

The experienced Marshall is coming off a four-year coaching tenure at Malvern.

He has operated the Hawks’ Academy program for the past two years.

“I look forward to working with Ben Williams (head coach) and identifying the young cricket talent within the bayside area,’’ Marshall said.

“With wonderful facilities, both ground and practice wickets, I can’t wait to help and improve committed cricketers who wish to challenge their game at the highest level possible in Victoria, that being Premier Cricket.

“I am passionate about the game, and with my background and experience gained on and off the field in both sports of cricket and AFL and having had the opportunity to work with many fine cricket people within the Crusaders organisation especially, I hope to contribute with Ben in making Kingston Hawks Cricket Club a destination for bayside cricketers to enjoy and flourish.’’
