Peninsula Football League action: Frankston YCW enhance flag claims with brutal win over Karingal

THE Frankston YCW machine has cranked into gear with a 179-point win over Karingal, while Langwarrin kept its Peninsula league finals hopes alive with a win over Bonbeach.

THE Frankston YCW machine has well and truly cranked into gear.

On Saturday the Stonecats walloped Karingal 27.20 (182) to 0.3 (3) to make it five wins on the spin in Peninsula league.

Back-to-back flags appear well within YC’s reach.

Frankston YCW’s thumping win had a touch of ruthlessness about it. The Stonecats unleashed an 11-goal third quarter and then appeared hellbent on keeping the hapless Karingal goal-less.

YCW coach Scott Mathers urged his players to be “imaginative’’ in the last term and spoke of the importance of the Stonecats stamping their authority.

David Bodley fired off seven goals and Anthony Bruhn five, while Scott MacLeod capped a best-on-ground display with three majors.

For Karingal, which appears headed for a winless season, former Dolphins champion Bevan Malloy was among its best players.

Langwarrin kept its finals hopes alive with an eight-point win over Bonbeach. Dylan Luxa, Rikki Johnston and Joel Bateman sparkled for Langy in the win, and Sean Herdman booted three goals.

Edi-Asp posted their biggest score of the season as they stunned third-placed Pines by 72 points. Mick Meehan booted six goals, Jarrod Garth four and Brad Tagg three in the Eagles’ 24.11 (155) to 11.17 (83) win. For Pines, the loss ended a four-game winning streak and will no doubt serve as a reality check leading into finals.

Seaford dispatched Chelsea by 54 points, inspired by Aaron Walton (six goals) and Kieran Shaw (three).

After Chelsea booted the first two goals of the game, the Tigers took control, kicking the next seven goals before the quarter time siren. Matt Herbert, Dean Kemble and Nick Braund led Seaford’s charge.

In Nepean league, Rye’s premiership push has been boosted by the return of dual league medallist Ben Holmes.

Holmes, who retired last season to pursue his dream of competing in the Hawaiian Ironman, slotted three goals in the Demons’ 32-point win over Red Hill.

He combined well with fellow Rye forwards Andrew Dean (four goals), Adrian Gileno (three) and Nathan Henley (two) in the 14.14 (98) to 10.6 (66) win that improved the Demons’ record to 9-2.

“It was an important win for us especially coming off a big loss against Somerville,’’ Rye coach Josh Moore said.

Rye led by four points at half-time and made its move in the third quarter, outscoring Red Hill 6.4 to 2.2.

“At half-time I put it on them again and asked a few individual players to stand up and they responded really well in that third quarter,’’ Moore said.

Demons skipper Adam Kirkwood led the way with a splendid display in the backline, especially in the second half, while Steven Daniher also impressed.

The only lowlight for Rye was a serious injury to Matt Dunn, who suffered a punctured lung and broken ribs after a heavy bump in the last minute of the game.

Rosebud’s seven-game winning streak ended at the hands of reigning champs Sorrento, which posted a workmanlike 24-point victory.

“We ran into a pretty red-hot side,’’ Rosebud coach Nick Jewell said.

“I said to the boys before the game, ‘throw the ladder in the bin’. They (Sorrento) are the heavyweight champions, there’s no doubt about it. They showed why they are one of the best sides going around.’’

With Leigh Poholke (seven goals) and Myles Pitt (four) in sharp form up forward, Sorrento led narrowly at the first two changes before accelerating clear in the third quarter with five goals to one. Rosebud star Tom Baker booted six goals to follow up his bag of 10 last week. In his 399th game, Sorrento champ Guy Stringer appeared to hurt his arm in the first quarter but played out most of the game.

Crib Point snapped a four-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 48-point win over Dromana.

Dean Warry kicked five goals and James Cook dominated as the Magpies got on a roll after trailing narrowly at the first two breaks. Terry Wheeler was Dromana’s best player.

Somerville made it five on end with a 28-point win over Devon Meadows, set up by Luke Collie, Justin Allsopp and Billy Rolfe.

Frankston Bombers thrashed Tyabb by 110 points, with Andrew White, Scott Foster and Jake Foster kicking four goals apiece. Former Frankston Blues basketballer James Orr was named the Bombers’ best in the 23.23 (161) to 7.9 (51) win.
