Noble Park captain Luke Wintle his century against St Bernard’s

LUKE Wintle made a golden duck in the previous round. On Saturday the Noble Park captain made 141 not out against St Bernard’s.

IT was Luke Wintle’s first century for Noble Park. And it was a fabulous hand.

The skipper cracked 141 not off 122 deliveries as the Parkers ran up 6-231 off their 45 against St Bernard’s in the north-east VSDCA clash at St Bernards College in Essendon on Saturday.

The home side replied with 8-193, kept in check by champion slow bowler Isi Perera, who returned 3-21 off his nine overs.

Andy Berman (2-35 off nine) and his new-ball partner Kalhath ilippuli arachchige (0-25 off nine) did their bit.

Noble lost the out-of-form Shehan Perera to the first ball of the second over but was 1-100 after 23 overs as Wintle and Chris Lee settled in for a century stand.

Lee went for 56, but Wintle pushed on to three figures. He hit 20 fours and 2 sixes.

Funny game, cricket: in his previous home-and-away match he was bowled for a golden duck. That said, he had opened the season with scores of 48, 53 and 66 not out.

In Saturday’s scorecard his unbeaten 141 stood out like a rose in a vegetable patch.

“He went in and just flayed them,’’ Parkers president Craig Ortland said.

“He hit that many fours at the start of his innings. He took control.

“We lost our way a bit later on but he was still there at the end. Fantastic innings …. 141 not out in a one-dayer is a great effort.’’

With five wins and one loss Noble Park is second on the north-west section ladder.

It was a good day for the club: the seconds and thirds also won, and, in the DDCA, the Under 15 Division 3 team amassed 1-300 off 45 overs.

Prabhav Mishra retired on 77 and Archie Stefan on 76, and Oliver Stefan was 53 not out and Jenil Paten 42 not out.

Archie Stefan has scores of 30no, 31no, 75no and 76 no this season. He and his brother Oliver have been named in the DDCA Under 14 team to contest the VMCU Russell Allen Shield in January.

Meanwhile, Isi Perera has been included in the VSDCA representative team to play the VCCL at Marshall Cricket Club in Geelong on Sunday, December 9.

The side will be captained by James Wild from Ormond. Brendan McGuinnes (Oakleigh), Ryan Pearson (Plenty Valley), Chris Weeks (Kew), Ricky Damiano (Brighton), Patrick O’Malley (Williamstown), Arosh Janoda (St Bernard’s), James Pearson (Brunswick), Raza Rizwan (Ivanhoe), Adam Yates (Altona) and Brad Jones (Melton) were also selected.
