Langwarrin put the cap on a trailblazing season by winning the inaugural MPCA Women’s premiership on Sunday.

Captained by champion Kylie Walters, Langy beat Balnarring by six wickets in the grand final at Lloyd Park to complete an undefeated season.

Balnarring batted first and made 89 in 24.3 overs.

Langwarrin opening bowler Kiah Laughlin-Glen (3-21) made early inroads, and Stephanie White (2-16), Brittany Partington (2-13) and Fern Brady (2-6) maintained the pressure.

In reply, Langwarrin made a steady start to be 3-44 before a 40-run partnership between Lauren Campbell (8) and Walters had the Langy girls poised for glory.

The end came swiftly as Walters — the competition’s best player — asserted her superiority, Langy achieving victory in the 27th over, reaching 4-92.

Walters finished unbeaten on 44, going past 400 runs for the season in the process.

Not only did Walters average 133.67 with the bat and 9.92 with the ball, she also made history during the season by scoring Langwarrin’s first women’s century (104no against Rye) and taking the first five-for (5-11 against Pines).

Langwarrin was coached by Stuart Plunkett, who set simple but attainable goals at the start — to have fun at all times and play as a team.

It was mission accomplished.

And the women’s side was a welcome addition to the club, embraced by all.

While Walters was a stand out performer, Langwarrin had many key contributors in its path to glory.

Laughlin-Glen was consistent with bat and ball, making 227 runs and taking 10 wickets.

White collected nine wickets and Brady six, including a dynamic 2-6 in the grand final.

Partington batted well at the top of the order all season, making 130 runs in eight innings, including scores of 27, 32no and 30no.

The MPCA Women’s competition was a resounding success and the association plans to expand it next season.
