BROTHERS Josh and Jake Mold combined for 15 goals as Red Hill trounced Tyabb by 132 points to surge to top spot in Nepean league on Saturday.
Josh, who hadn’t kicked a goal in four games this season, had a day to remember, slotting 10.2. His older brother Jake chimed in with five. Joining the brothers in the goal blitz was Michael Chaplin (six).
Red Hill powered away to win 25.12 (162) to 4.6 (30) and improve its record to 4-1.
Hillmen coach Tony Blackford said 10-goal man Josh, a midfielder, “had a day out’’.
“He was super clean,’’ he said. “He got them from marking, crumbing – everything.’’
Red Hill improved its percentage by more than 50 after the impressive win.
Somerville, with a point to prove, roared back to form with a rousing 13-point win over reigning champ Sorrento.
Still stinging after a surprise loss to Pearcedale last round, the Eagles made an explosive start, kicking the opening four goals of the game to set up their 11.10 (76) to 9.9 (63) win.
Ben Sedgwick ignited Somerville with a best-on-ground display and Kane McKenzie and Todd Farrelly were key contributors. Sorrento, with coach Troy Schwarze overseas, has dropped its past two games. Leigh Treeby has taken the reins in Schwarze’s absence.
Frankston Bombers cracked their duck egg with a gripping four-point win over Crib Point. In a tight tussle, the Bombers snatched back the lead with a goal by Zach Longham to win 11.11 (77) to 10.13 (73).
Longham finished with four goals and James Degenhardt, Josh Chapman and Scott Foster were terrific for the winners.
Hastings continued its unbeaten run with a 33-point win over Devon Meadows. Kain Stratton dominated along with Paul Rogasch and Matt Clifford.
In Peninsula league, Bonbeach co-captain Jackson Casey was told a week out that he would have the job of playing on Stephen Milne when the former St Kilda star made his cameo appearance with Chelsea.
Excited by the challenge, he prepared diligently.
And on Saturday, when the big day came, Casey stepped up, blanketing Milne and keeping the champ to only one goal as Bonbeach scored a rousing 31-point win.
Bonbeach coach Steve Hughes said Casey usually plays in the midfield but was the right man for the job.
“It’s that old adage, play a good player on a good player,’’ Hughes said.
“He was pretty excited about the role. I made my mind up a week before and told him after the Langwarrin game. He had a week to digest it and prepared really well. He played good, tight defensive footy and I would say Milney would admit that he was beaten.’’
Hughes said his side’s ferocious tackling rattled Chelsea and set up the 12.9 (81) to 6.14 (50) victory.
The Sharks had 86 tackles, including 20 in the first quarter to restrict Chelsea as it kicked with a strong breeze.
“I reckon it’s our best tackle count by 30-plus,’’ Hughes said.
“Defensively we put a lot of pressure on the opposition and they probably turned it over a few times under that heat.
“A few blokes really stood up for us. It was a good day.’’
Bonbeach’s midfielders – led by Mark Tyrell, Gary Carpenter and Robbie Ferraro, in his first game for the season - were relentless with their pressure on the opposition.
Up forward, Chris Bryan provided a strong target, booting four goals.
Bonbeach, after a heavy loss in its first game, could go into the interleague break 3-3 if it can beat bottom side Karingal this weekend.
Former Frankston Dolphins midfielder James Cameron capped a best-on-ground display with two goals as Mornington halted Pines’ unbeaten run in Peninsula league on Saturday.
The Bulldogs won by 50 points, 14.15 (99) to 6.13 (49), at Alexandra Park.
Cameron starred, supported by Joel Miller, Ben Wells and Adam Symes. Mornington had five multiple goal kickers, led by Dale Whelan (three goals).
Pines’ king pin Aaron Edwards was kept goalless, although he played 70 per cent on the ball.
“Their pressure was really good, we just couldn’t find any space on that ground,’’ Pines coach Paddy Swayn said. “We probably should have been up at half-time and in the third we didn’t take our chances. I was disappointed but we competed quite well. They’ve probably got stronger from last year.’’
Langwarrin coach Gavin Artico praised his players’ competitive spirit after the Kangaroos edged Frankston YCW by five points at John Coburn Oval.
Langy lost two players to injury - Jayden Grose and Nick Hammill – yet finished over the top of the Stonecats, winning 12.8 (80) to 10.15 (75).
“It was a gutsy effort,’’ Artico said. “We could have looked at it and said, ‘this is all a bit hard’, but we had a red hot dip.’’
In a tense finish, Langwarrin midfielder Shane Paterson put his side a point behind after intercepting a kick-in and then Matt Dimkos put the Kangaroos in front. Dimkos finished with five goals, Gerard Brown (four) and Paterson starred.
