Keysborough died with its boots on in a shootout with Tooradin at the Last Chance Saloon on Saturday.
The Kookaburras stared down a vulnerable, undermanned opposition in a desperate bid to break clear of wooden-spoon territory and add another notch to it belt before riding off in the CCFL sunset at season’s end.
But the home town Seagulls were quicker on the draw, kicking 12 goals to one in the first half, and after the smoke had settled the Buras’ tombstone read 15.16 (106) to 4.9 (33).
Tooradin’s list has been decimated by injury and illness over recent weeks and had railroaded anyone and everyone to pull on the boots, including the coach.
But the Seagulls’ woes were nothing compared to the Burras’ run of injuries.
Keysborough faces Beaconsfield and ROC in the next fortnight and on form has about as much chance as Custer.
It will result in a showdown with cellar dweller Hampton Park for the wooden spoon in its last hurrah in the CCFL.
Hampton Park has an even tougher fortnight against Pakenham and Berwick.
Keysborough coach Chris Bryan has previously sung the praises of midfielder Daniel Morland, who on Saturday again showed he was as tough as rawhide under pressure.
He was the Burras’ best by a Texas mile.
“He’s the heart and soul of the place. He’s one of the smallest blokes on the field but has the biggest heart,” Bryant said of Morland.
“Everyone should take a leaf out of his book in his approach and attitude to footy.”
Keysy vice-captain Geoff Humphreys made the most of his limited opportunities and was his side’s only multiple goalkicker with two.
Morland, Ryan Goodes and Tim Werner, also battled hard in a team that is finding it hard to find motivation in football limbo as it decides its future.
