Hampton Hammers football coach Matt Ferguson found, Southern Football Netball League

Family members have confirmed that a senior football coach who hadn’t been seen since last Friday has been located.

Missing local football coach Matt Ferguson has been found safe and well.

Ferguson, 45, was located last night in Berwick, relieved family confirmed this morning.

They had earlier believed he was in the Warrigal district.

A family member thanked the public for sharing information about his disappearance.

He said the family was overwhelmed by the support.

Ferguson, the senior coach of Southern Football Netball League Division 2 club Hampton Hammers, had not been seen since last Friday, and on Monday Frankston police issued an appeal to help find him.

They said he left his Skye home about 2pm, driving a black 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander with the registration AJR 868.

“Police and family hold concerns for Matthew as he has medical conditions which require medication,’’ the police alert said.

Ferguson was appointed coach of Hampton in October, 2019, after a successful stint at Keysborough.

He took Keysy to the finals in each of his three years in charge.

Ferguson had previously been a reserves and assistant coach at the club.

He is regarded as one of the Southern league’s most dedicated and enthusiastic coaches.

“I had six years there all up and decided it was time for me to look at other opportunities,’’ he said after joining the Hammers.

“Hampton was one of the jobs that was available. I like the league, I like the people within the league, so I’m happy to be staying in it.’’

He said the prospect of coaching against Keysborough: “Yeah, that will be tough, because I’ve got a lot of good mates at Keysy. But the other side of it is that I’ll get to have a beer with them at least twice next year after the game.’’
