IT may have been seven years since Beau Muston played in the AFL, but the ex-Hawk’s tackling skills came in very handy when he saw an alleged attack in Frankston.

The former Hawthorn Football Club midfielder and Frankston Bombers footy coach chased and tackled a man who had allegedly attacked a security guard.

Muston saw the incident unfold outside his clothing store, Caminha, in Shannon Mall. The security guard fell heavily on a gutter, breaking his leg, while the suspect fled but didn’t get far as Muston sprinted after him.

“There were so many bystanders and no one was doing anything so I ran over and got this bloke in a headlock, just restrained him,” he said.

“I was like, ‘can you get more security, someone do something, can you call the police?’” Police were soon on the scene and the suspect was taken away. The security guard suffered two fractures to his leg and underwent surgery last week.

Muston scoffed at suggestions he was a hero and said instinct kicked in.

He said the area around Shannon Mall was “never quiet”. “You get some really good people and you also get some people who cause issues,” he said. “That’s the first time I’ve had to do something like that.”

Muston joked that if he did a similar tackle on a footy field he’d probably be rubbed out for a few weeks.

“I just couldn’t do nothing,” he said.

“He (the security officer) was in a bad way and he (the offender) just ran away. You can’t just do what you did and get away with it.”

Muston is playing-coach of the Frankston Bombers, who were beaten by Hastings in the Nepean league grand final last season. He is hungry for success in 2017.

“We’ve got unfinished business,” he said.
