Former Sri Lankan star to play Super Slam T20 for Casey South Melbourne

A FORMER Sri Lankan international heads a package of recruits for Casey South Melbourne for the inaugural Super Slam T20.

Casey South Melbourne has executed a recruiting coup for the inaugural Victorian Super Slam T20, locking in former Sri Lankan international Nuwan Kulasekara.

Right-arm paceman Kulasekara, who played 21 Test matches, 184 ODIs and 58 T20Is, is playing with Mordialloc in the Dandenong District Cricket Association this season.

He will also turn out for the Swans in T20.

Casey South Melbourne has also recruited former leading Premier Cricket batsman Dale Tormey and Hallam Kalora Park all-rounder Jordan Hammond for the tournament as it pushes for a strong showing.

Kulasekara played for Sri Lanka at ODI and T20 level last year and at one stage was rated the ICC’s No 1 ODI bowler.

The Swans will also have their new captain, English County player Luke Wells, in the line-up.

Wells will miss the club’s first match of the season, a one-dayer against Frankston Peninsula at Casey Fields, on October 6.

All 18 Victorian Premier clubs are competing in Super Slam #01, which will have two conferences, each with nine teams.

Clubs will play six preliminary rounds. Each conference will have a top four, leading to conference semi-finals and then a final.

The two conference winners will play off in the Championship Final — the “Grand Slam’’.

Both finalists will go to Adelaide for the Cricket Australia National Premier T20 Championship in March. It will be televised nationally.

The Swans have been bunched with Kingston Hawthorn, Camberwell Magpies, Dandenong, Ringwood, Frankston-Peninsula, Monash Tigers, St Kilda and Prahran in the Melbourne Stars conference.

Greenvale Kangaroos, Melbourne, Fitzroy Doncaster, Northcote, Essendon, Geelong, Footscray, Melbourne University and Carlton form the Renegades conference.

All clubs must supply an initial squad of 15 players by October 1 and can top up after Cricket Victoria releases a list of unsigned players from other clubs.

Super Slam #01 will blast off with double-headers on Sunday, November 25.
