Former AFL star Brendan Fevola shakes off a quad injury and keeps Good Friday fans entertained

BRENDAN Fevola did not disappoint the nearly 5000 fans who turned out for Frankston’s Good Friday clash with Pearcedale.

IF it was any other game, Brendan Fevola would not have returned to the ground after he injured his quad in the first quarter of Frankston’s Good Friday clash with Pearcedale.

But the majority of the nearly 5000 fans who turned up at Baxter Park came to see the former AFL star and the last thing Fevola wanted was to disappoint the large crowd. “He told me at quarter-time his quad was no good and to put him in the goal square,’’ Frankston coach Beau Muston said and that’s just what he did.

The former Carlton and Brisbane star toughed it out and wound up kicking six goals in his one-off appearance for the Bombers who beat Pearcedale 16.13 (109) to 5.13 (43).

Fevola kicked more goals on the day than Pearcedale did combined.

“It was all a bit of a whirlwind,’’ Muston said. “The crowd was there to see Fev and we hoped he was good enough to outmark them after his injury and he was.’’

Former Hawthorn champion Dermott Brereton served as a runner for the Bombers, which only added to the atmosphere in the rooms and on the pitch.

The Bombers made good use of the breeze in the opening quarter and kicked the first five goals of the game. Pearcedale made a bit of a run in the second quarter but the Bombers were never seriously threatened and kicked away to win easily.

Five Bombers played their first senior game and Muston said it would be one they’d remember for a long time. The Bombers got through the game unscathed and will field a full group when they take on Tyabb on Saturday, April 9.

“We’ve got a lot to improve on,’’ Muston said. “We haven’t made finals for a few years but Friday was a good start.’’

Dale Sutton was best for the Bombers while Joel White was best for the Dales.

Dromana pulled away in the last quarter to defeat Sorrento 16.6 (102) to 11.11 (77) in their Easter Saturday Nepean League clash in front of a big crowd at Dromana Recreation Reserve.

The Tigers led by just 10 points at three-quarter time but Reece Wilde, saving his best for crunch time, kicked all four of his goals on the day in the final term to give the Tigers some breathing room.

Wilde, 19, was the league best and fairest winner last year in the Under 19s and was one of four first-gamers for the Tigers, the others being Daniel Marchesani, Dean Waugh and Ethan Johnstone.

“Reece had a great last quarter and carried us over the line,’’ said Dromana head coach Rikki Johnston.

Beau Cosson also booted four goals for the winners while Waugh kicked three and Shaun Clarke two.

“It was a pretty good game and a good contest,’’ said new Sorrento coach Nick Jewell, who moved over from Rosebud in the off-season. “Credit to Dromana. They were fitter and got the result. We did not play anywhere near the way we had trained. Dromana did not allow us to move the ball around the way we wanted.’’

Jewell said his side needed a bit of time to grasp the defensive style of footy he has implemented but was hopeful things would start to click after next week’s bye.

The Sharks came through the game unscathed but lost key recruit Rob Forrest to a knee reconstruction in their final practice match. He’ll miss the entire season.

“We’ve lost Rob, had four or five retire and move on. It has given some kids an opportunity,’’ Jewell said.

Each side started well, kicking five goals in the opening term. The Sharks led by a point at quarter-time but Dromana led by five points at halftime and kept its nose in front the rest of the way.

Elsewhere in the Nepean League over Easter weekend Rosebud and Rye drew 48-48 at Olympic Oval

Rye led by three goals at quarter-time but was unable to go on with it.

The Buds rallied and had a chance to win the game but kicked 1.7 in the last term.

The only multiple goal-kicker on the day with two was Rye’s Matthew Greig.

Ryan Taylor was best on ground for Rye with Nicholas Boswell Rosebud’s best.

Prior to the game Rosebud unfurled its 2015 premiership flag.

Somerville crunched Tyabb 28.16 (184) to 11.6 (72) at Somerville Recreation Reserve. Somerville piled on 9.2 in the opening quarter to Tyabb’s 2.1 and never looked back, having 43 scoring shots to Tyabb’s 13.
