DDCA: Springvale South spinner Jarryd Straker runs through Buckley Ridges

Jarryd Straker took seven wickets and Malinga Bandara three as Springvale South spun out Buckley Ridges in the second semi-final. And Hallam Kalora Park held out Berwick despite Matt Chasemore’s century.

Springvale South powered through to the DDCA Turf 1 grand final on Sunday after spinner Jarryd Straker grabbed seven Buckley Ridges wickets in the second semi-final at Alex Nelson Reserve.

The Bloods were defending only 147 and Buckley resumed at 2-66 on the second day.

Straker had both wickets to fall and he snared five more on Sunday to finish with a stunning 7-34 off 28 overs as Buckley fell for 116.

He bowled 12 maidens.

In the first semi-final, Berwick champion Matthew Chasemore hit an outstanding century against Hallam Kalora Park but in an enthralling finish on Sunday the Hawks won by seven runs, keeping their season alive but bumping out the Bears.

A brilliant opening spell from Ridges paceman Jurgen Andersen had put minor premier Springy South in all sorts of trouble on day one of the match.

With the winner guaranteed a spot in the 2018-19 Turf 1 grand final, the former Kiwi ripped through the Bloods’ top-order, picking up vital wickets, none more important than five-time Wookey Medal winner Steve Spoljaric.

Anderson claimed a brilliant one-handed caught and bowled to remove the champion.

With the typically batsmen-friendly wicket providing plenty of assistance to the Bucks’ quicks, they took full toll, having the Bloods reeling at 7-56 when Jarrod Armitage was caught by Ben Watson off the bowling of in-form Englishman Robert Peat.

Like all good sides, the Bloods kept themselves in the contest thanks to a late-order fightback led by young quick and No 10 Matt Wetering, top scoring with 31 not out.

In reply, the Bucks fought to a strong position at stumps, being 2-66 with Straker taking both wickets, including South African David White (8) with a peach of a delivery.

With former Test man Malinga Bandara (3-51 off 27 overs) putting the squeeze on from the other end, Straker worked his way through the Buckley batting on Sunday.

Former Bloods president Kevin Murphy said it was the best spell of bowling he had seen, “ever’’.

Take away Daniel Watson’s 43 and it was a sorry card for the Ridges. Troy Aust was 15 not out.

Similar to Springy South, Hallam Kalora Park found itself in deep trouble in tts first semi-final against Berwick at Frawley Rd, stumbling to 7-87 after winning the toss and batting on a green but flat pitch.

Openers Leigh Booth and Ben Hillard got the Hawks off to yet another solid start with the first wicket falling after a steady 38-run partnership.

Thanks to a brilliant spell of swing bowling from Chasemore (4-26), Hallam lost 7-49 and looked in danger of being bowled out cheaply.

But the underrated Kevin Kean strode to the crease and the No 8 was clearly the most positive of the Hawks batsmen.

And after surviving a big caught behind appeal early he went on to a very well-made 60.

Kean was dismissed in unusual fashion when he was run out by a Josh Holden direct-hit from first slip after surviving an LBW shout on the same ball.

Peter Sofra and Chris Pereira also provided some valuable resistance, helping the Hawks get to a defendable all-out 206 from 86 overs.

In response, Berwick lost youngster Lachie Brown right on the eve of stumps when he edged a lifting Willy Whyte delivery that was nicely taken by Hillard at first slip, leaving the Bears 1-1 and a challenging run-chase ahead on day two.

They collapsed to 5-27 on Sunday but Chasemore revived them with the support of Jarrod Goodes.

The pair lifted the score from 8-129 to 8-193 before Chasemore was dismissed shortly after reaching his century.

His 101 came off 181 deliveries and included 7 fours and 1 six.

When Goodes was caught for 30 the Hawks had held on, largely due to Jordan Hammond’s outstanding return of 5-60 off 29.4 overs and Whyte’s 4-53 off 23.

Hallam Kalora Park will now play Buckley Ridges in the preliminary.

In Turf 2, Narre South star Scott Phillips took 5-37 as his team dismissed Narre Warren for 147, rushed to 1-123 at stumps and wrapped up victory on Sunday.

In the other semi Dingley (126) fell well short of Narre North’s 213.
