Skye Cricket Club’s women’s side’s historic first premiership last week will long be remembered.

In a classic “nail-biter’’, Skye’s Anne Mahon — nursing a torn hamstring — hit a single off the last ball of the grand final to tie with Parkfield in an epic flag decider in the South One Day competition.

Under the rules, both sides were awarded the premiership.

It was the first-ever tied grand final in Victorian women’s cricket.

“Oh my God, it was a nail-biter. It went down to the wire,’’ Skye team manager and player Lee-Ann Jacobson, who shared a match-winning 38-run partnership with Mahon, said.

And giving the result a bit of a “spooky’’ element, Skye skipper Stacey Dorbolo inadvertently predicted the tight finish in her pre-game speech to her players.

“Stacey’s speech at the start of the game was all around, ‘whatever happens it’s not over until the last ball’,’’ Skye women’s coach Mark Greenwood said.

“And in this case she was absolutely spot on.

“She said that at the start of the game and essentially that’s how the game went. A good call by the skipper.’’

Mahon (23no) injured her hamstring and required a runner, but she pushed on as Skye refused to lie down.

The Chickaburras needed six runs an over for the last eight overs.

“The two batters got together and did a lot of running between the wickets which brought us back into the game,’’ Greenwood said.

“We were well behind the eight ball at one stage.’’

Skye and Parkfield had engaged in some tight tussles during the season and the flag decider continued that trend.

“Look, at the end of the day the winner was women’s cricket,’’ Greenwood said.

“It’s always been two or three runs between us. They’ve all been nail-biting matches and this was no different.’’

With only one cup available after the game, Parkfield, being the home club, was given it.

But Skye will soon be presented with theirs, and it will be a good excuse for another celebration.

Skye’s premiership side: Anne Mahon, Keira Mahon, Natalee Bone, Janine Allen, Tori Russell, Amanda Dorbolo, Marnie Kelly, Sam Verhagen, Shannon Barnes, Stacey Dorbolo, Lee-Ann Jacobson, Anjali Singh and Megan Jacobson. Coach: Mark Greenwood.
