CRICKET Australia has the Big Bash. Now Cricket Victoria has Super Slam.

CV has developed plans to revamp the Premier Cricket Twenty20 men’s competition, splitting it into two conferences named after BBL franchises Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades.

PREMIER CRICKET SET TO HAVE NEW T20 FORMAT

The Super Slam grand final will be played at CV’s new headquarters, the CitiPower Centre, and the winner will go into a Cricket Australia premier T20 carnival in Adelaide in March, to be televised nationally.

Finalists will receive “significant” prizemoney.

CV says the Super Slam will:

*PROVIDE a “robust and high performance’’ pathway to T20 cricket for Premier players.

*IDENTIFY potential BBL players.

*CREATE strong strategic links between BBL clubs and Victorian Premier Cricket.

*ALIGN with a Cricket Australia national T20 carnival.

A draft report says Super Slam will be played over two Sundays and have six midweek matches, mainly through December and January.

Greenvale Kangaroos, Melbourne, St Kilda, Prahran, Essendon, Geelong, Footscray, Melbourne University and Carlton will form the Renegades conference and Fitzroy-Doncaster, Kingston Hawthorn, Camberwell Magpies, Casey South Melbourne, Dandenong, Ringwood, Frankston-Peninsula, Monash Tigers and Northcote make up the Stars conference.

Both will launch with double-headers, the Renegades teams at Princes Park and the Stars at the CitiPower precinct.

Super Slam will be a stand-alone competition and players can become “free agents’’ and play at any club under permit.

Clubs can also recruit guest players from other associations.

No player-points system will apply and each team can field one interstate or overseas Big Bash star.

There will be separate club and player statistics but selection will be recognised as club First XI matches.

Premier Cricket manager Mike Ronchi sent clubs a draft of plans for “Super Slam 01’’ today, inviting feedback.

It will be discussed further at a meeting of presidents on Wednesday, June 27.

Twenty20 cricket was introduced to Premier ranks in 2004-05.

It has since occupied various times and slots and even titles, being known as the Primary Edge Cup, the Kookaburra T20 Cup and then the Bartercard Premier T20.

But CV believes the Super Slam concept takes it to another level.
