Cricket snicks: Seven ducks in a row, Poholke gets one over the Goose

It’s turned into duck season for an unlucky Mornington Peninsula league cricketer stuck in an extraordinary form slump.

Langwarrin’s Brett Cuzens has made seven successive ducks, but is due for a change of luck.

Talk about a form slump.

Langwarrin sevenths captain Brett Cuzens made his sixth duck in a row for the season on Saturday.

Add the blob he made in the last game of last season and that’s seven successive ducks.

At least “Cuz” got out going for it against Mt Eliza on Saturday — his desperate attempt to get off the mark saw him sky a lusty blow.

But it was caught, much to the disappointment of about 20 of his mates who had gathered in anticipation to see him score a run.

Despite the horror run, Cuzens has managed to maintain his sense of humour.

“I’m working on a new technique, it’s just taking longer than expected,” he joked.

“Cuz” will try to break the run drought at Seaford on Saturday.

Mate, swing hard.

POHOLK GETS THE GOOSE

Leigh Poholke and Simon Goosey have kicked thousands of goals between them as footballers.

On Saturday, the spearheads came face-to-face — on the cricket field.

And it was Poholke, playing for Sorrento’s seconds, who had the last laugh when he bowled Goosey.

“I bowl right-arm junk,’’ Poholke joked.

“But it was good enough to get Simon out so that’s all that matters.

“I said to him, ‘you’ll be forever in my pocket’.”

But the Goose fired a parting shot as he trudged off.

“He asked me how many times I’d kicked a hundred goals in a season because he’d done it 12,” Poholke said.

CONNOR’S CRACKING SHOT

When you’ve never hit a six — as was the case with Mt Eliza seconds player Connor Macpherson — imagine the excitement when you do it to win a game.

And that’s exactly what 17-year-old Connor did against Langwarrin on Saturday; he smashed the third last ball of the game out of the park at Madsen Reserve to give his side a thrilling two-wicket victory.

His teammates cheered so loudly that Connor’s mum, at the nearby family’s home, heard the commotion and phoned him to ask what all the noise was about.

MIGHTY MAX

And what a First XI debut by Flinders 15-year-old Max Wilkinson on Saturday.

He took a wicket in first over, and finished with 3-28 off eight overs, to help the Sharks beat Seaford Tigers in MPCA Peninsula.

The young man has a bright future.

HEWITT BLITZES TON

There was plenty of big hitting when the Jack Peacock Cup Twenty20 games launched last night, but none more destructive than Hastings skipper Luke Hewitt.

He smashed 101, with 11 fours and 2 sixes, in a score of 5-148 against Crib Point (7-135 in reply).
