When it came to fast bowling, Casey South Melbourne’s cupboard was getting to be like Old Mother Hubbard’s, a bit bare.
Jordan Hammond returned to Hallam Kalora Park and then Josh Dowling joined Narre South, two First XI pacemen gone.
Happily for the Swans, the departures have been followed by the arrival of prominent Cricket South Bayside player Callum Dodson to support spearhead Nathan Lambden.
The 25-year-old has joined his great mate and left-arm fast bowler Jackson Fry at the Swans.
Dodson, a tall right-armer, has been a leading performer for Aspendale, taking 51 wickets in the past two seasons.
He led Aspendale to the Division 1 flag in 2018-19.
“Really excited to have him,’’ Casey South Melbourne coach Brian Keogh said of
Dodson, a CSB representative.
“He bowls a heavy ball, which is what you want at Casey Fields. He’s not one of these guys who slides on. He’s tall and he’s up and over, around the 130kmh mark, and he can bat and he fields really well.
“He’s a competitive guy, he’s 25 and he knows his game. We think he can play First XI from the get-go, to be honest.’’
Dodson and the other Swans bowlers will work under new assistant coach and former Victorian paceman Will Carr.
Fry said he expected Dodson to hold his own at Premier level.
“Very tidy medium-fast bowler, hits a good length, can swing the ball both ways and he’s got a big heart — he’ll bowl all day,’’ he said.
“He’ll fit in very well. Very popular. I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about him.’’
With star English batsman Luke Wells not returning, Casey South Melbourne has appointed Michael Wallace has its new captain.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Dev Pollock is vice-captain.
“Wally and Dev are natural leaders and their work ethic, determination and loyalty to the club makes them great appointments,’’ Keogh said on the club website.
“They both have so much to offer and will complement and support one another very well.”
Wallace said it was an honour to lead the club.
After starting out as a leg-spinner, he has made his name in Premier Cricket as a reliable middle-order batsman. He has played 88 matches, hitting almost 2200 runs, with three centuries.
