Narre Warren full-forward Kerem Baskaya bagged 15 goals against an injury-depleted Doveton on Saturday but was left stranded on 99 for the season.
It follows bags of 11 and 12 goals, and took Big Bas’s tally to 38 goals from three games.
He was a Colossus who crushed the Doves defence and reigned supreme in the goalsquare.
“Big Bas’’ had a big day out and was easily best-afield in the Magpies score of 29.14 (188) to 2.7 (19).
But he had a touch of the flu and had a restless Friday night.
“I didn’t get much sleep overnight and needed a few coffees in the morning to wake me up. Once I got going in the second half it was pretty good, but I was still pretty knackered after the game,’’ he said.
Baskaya started slowly, booting two goals in the first term and three in the second, but stormed home with 10 goals in the second half. Sitting on 99, his Magpie teammates tried desperately to get to him that extra goal.
“I just wanted to get it (the 100 goals) out of the way before the finals. The boys did their best and I got pretty close but it wasn’t to be.
“Last year I was in the 90s during the finals and it was a bit of problem, a good problem, but it took the focus away from what we needed to do. Hopefully, I can get the 100 next week and get it out of the way.”
Baskaya said he’d refined his technique over his career.
“It’s about finding what works for you. I’ve changed my goal kicking action about 10 times. It’s all about the ball drop, getting that right, and keeping everything else pretty simple.
“In my younger days I was a bit too serious and played the game in my head before it started. But as I got older I tried to enjoy it more.
“It’s not hard to enjoy it down at Narre. We’ve got a group of young gun kids coming through, a core of older guys, a brilliant culture and an awesome coach who has got the respect of all the boys.”
It was also a big day for Baskaya’s teammate and five-time premiership player, Col McNamara, in his 150th game. The midfielder kicked two goals and was among the Magpies best along with Ben King, Josh Tonna and Nick Scanlon, with two goals.
Cameron Bowman, Mitchell Woolgar and James Temopoulos battled hard for the Doves, who have fallen away as injuries kicked in.
Pakenham led for three quarters before being overrun in the final term by Cranbourne.
The Lions were in front at every change and took a 19-point lead into the last break but the Eagles hit back, slamming on nine goals to five to win a thriller 16.18 (114) to 15.15 (105).
Daniel Fry kicked four goals and Russell Lehman, Anthony Young and Cory Lenders were among the Lions’ best.
Berwick returned to the winner’s list with a 67-point victory over cellar dweller Hampton Park.
Fighting to regain respect after their shock loss to Tooradin last week, the Wickers were stunned into action after trailing by six points at quarter time.
They had 10 goals in the second half to win 10.4 (131) to 10.4 (64).
Mitchell Johnson booted seven goals and Jordan Andrews five, while Jake Yields and Luke Sheppard also helped revitalise the fifth placed Wickers.
Beaconsfield faced a danger against Tooradin after the Seagulls’ win over Berwick, but the Eagles proved far too strong and won by 59 points, 14.17 (101) to 6.6. (42).
Beacy coach Clint Evans said it was “just a game.”
“There were plenty of mistakes but it was good to get the win. Our disposal was poor and we didn’t care enough to hit targets by hand or foot. We will definitely have to improve our ball use against Pakenham next week. We’re playing for third spot and we’ve got everything to play for.”
Kris Fletcher kicked four goals, and Scott Meyer and Jesse Linkins three for Beacy, while Linkins, Meyer and Cleyton Bertoncello led the way for the Eagles.
ROC produced stunning football to beat Keysborough by 97 points.
The Boxing Kangaroo put the result beyond doubt with a 10-goals-to-three first half and jumped further away in the second to win 19.17 (131) to 10.4 (64).
Matthew Clarke led the way with six goals and was well supported by Blair Allan with three. Clarke Jack Cousins, and James Canty were Beacy’s best.
