NEW warning signs have been introduced at Mt Martha in a bid to manage the crowds of young people visiting The Pillars.

Motorists are now advised to drive at 40km/h along The Esplanade between Hearn Rd and Lempriere Ave because of High Pedestrain [sic] Activity.

Acting VicRoads Regional Director Metro South East Vince Punaro said the work was undertaken by the Mornington Peninsula Shire following ongoing discussions between council, Victoria Police and VicRoads. However, he said speed signs were “advisory”, not “regulatory”.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Acting Chief Operating Officer Niall McDonagh said the council had installed the signs to improve road user safety.

The signs also alert road users to high levels of pedestrian activity between November and April.

The Pillars have become a phenomenon this summer, attracting thousands of thrill seekers keen to jump from the cliffs into Port Phillip Bay.

On a single warm day the waveless beach can draw up to 300 people, causing traffic chaos and a parking headache for residents.

Not everyone was pleased with the signs.

Within days of them being erected, four of the eight had been defaced with black spray paint.

The paint was swiftly removed by the council.
