There has been a miracle along the Murray with missing Sam Thomson found safe and well.

For more than a week, worried family have been praying for a happy ending to a baffling mystery which began when Mr Thompson, 19, left his Lysterfield South house to go camping on February 10.

But loved ones became worried, fearing the teen was tracing the steps of Christopher McCandless, the subject of a book and film Into The Wild.

McCandless went off grid and got trapped in the wilds of Alaska and eventually died after possibly eating poisoned berries in the grips of extreme hunger.

His mother, Elizabeth Thomson, said, “We are extremely relieved and extremely pleased to have spoken with him this afternoon.”

“I’m going to restrict it to this: Sam is safe and well, and he sounded good on the phone, and we had an arrangement where he’ll give us a call every week so that we know he’s safe and well on a regular basis going forward.”
