A busy Safety Beach intersection will be even more congested if a plan to open a McDonalds there goes ahead.
A A Holdings wants to demolish an existing service station, convenience store and the house behind it to build a new BP and “convenience restaurant” at the Marine Drive/Nepean Highway intersection.
The identity of the fast food chain included in the plan has not been revealed, but locals are convinced it’s a Maccas.
Social media was flooded with posts about the plan, many urging people to object.
“It will wreck the look of Safety Beach (and) entry to Dromana,” Woody K Tanya posted.
“I can see all the McDonald’s rubbish blowing straight across the road onto our beautiful beaches.”
Janette Wilson was worried about how the changes would effect the character of the “unique seaside area”.
She feared it would “severely affect the local residents including local business”.
“Are we happy to constantly turn the Peninsula into just another suburb?,” Ms Wilson said.
Not everyone was against the plan.
Shaun Shannon posted that the corner was already ugly and a makeover and the resulting businesses was likely to provide jobs for Mornington Peninsula people.
There are already two stand-alone McDonalds restaurants in Rosebud and Mornington and two more attached to Peninsula Link BP super service stations.
The planning application is on display online until July 30.
The council will not consider the plan before July 15.
Objections can be lodged online at mornpen.vic.gov.au
A A Holdings and McDonalds have been contacted.
