RSPCA launches 50 Shades of Grey adoption program for greyhounds

THE message from the RSPCA is black and white — give these former racing dogs a new home.

THE message from the RSPCA is black and white — give these greyhounds a home.

The society is holding a 50 Shades of Grey adoption promotion this week in a bid to rehome all of its greyhounds.

Up to 30 dogs will be available to adopt at a reduced fee of $50 until this Sunday.

About a quarter of the available dogs will be on show at RSPCA Peninsula in Pearcedale, with seven waiting to meet their new families.

All of the dogs are seeking new homes after their stints as racing dogs have ended.

Most of the greyhounds available for adoption have completed the Greyhound Adoption

Program (GAP) assessment, making them exempt from wearing a muzzle in public under

current Victorian legislation.

RSPCA Victoria Animal Care Manager Liz Walker said the organisation worked with GAP

to create additional rehoming opportunities for the dogs.

She said each of the dogs available for adoption had their own distinct personality.

“We have excitable, attention-seeking greys through to docile, shy gentle giants,” Ms

Walker said.

“Greyhounds are intelligent, friendly dogs with a gentle and sensitive temperament. They

are well suited to a variety of different lifestyles and homes, which is why they continue to

be one of our most popular dogs among those adopting.

“Although they are often bred for sprinting, many greyhounds do not require excessive

amounts of exercise and, after their regular walk and play time, will happily curl up in a comfy spot, often on their owner’s couch!

Last year the Pearcdale site helped rehome 31 greyhounds making the bred the fifth most popular at that centre.

Across the state a total of 146 dogs were adopted in 2017.
