A boozed-up country boy named Romeo threatened to kill his girlfriend, telling her he would “f** up her life” and that he would “get the f***ing slut” during an alcohol-fuelled fight.
He also choked his ex-girlfriend in her Carrum Downs home, holding his hand over her mouth so she struggled to breath.
River Romeo was sentenced to jail at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Friday, but walked free on time served.
The Mallacoota 28-year-old had pleaded guilty to threatening to kill, unlawful assault and damaging property, while other charges including false imprisonment and two other assaults were dropped.
Court documents released to the Leader state Romeo, who had been staying in Clayton, went to the woman’s house on June 7 this year and allegedly launched a drunken attack on her.
He told her “I’m going to get you, you f***ing slut” before grabbing her and pushing her to the ground.
He then held her down, with one hand on her throat, using his other hand to cover her nose and mouth.
He then got off her, picked up a bag and left.
The woman was so scared she went and sat in her car opposite the house in case Romeo returned.
A short time later she heard glass breaking and he appeared from the back of the property.
He had broken the toilet window, and cut his hand in the process.
Even when the woman helped him by driving him to hospital, he continued to be aggressive towards her.
Police came and Romeo was arrested, but he refused to make any comment.
A few weeks later he was granted bail on conditions including that he not come back to Melbourne and stay off the grog.
His defence lawyer said he had been found suitable for a community corrections order and was prepared to undergo treatment and rehabilitation for his alcohol and drug issues.
Magistrate Charles Tan said his offending warranted a jail term.
“This is clearly serious because your behaviour sought to dominate and belittle the worth of your victim,” Mr Tan said.
“No doubt she would have been terrified.”
He said Romeo’s lack of family violence priors, his plea of guilty that spared the woman having to attend court, and the two months he had already spent on remand were factors in his favour.
He was jailed for 66 days, classed as time served, and ordered to do an 18-month community correction order with 150 hours of unpaid work and treatment for alcohol and drug abuse.
