GUMBUYA Park has opened to the public after months of work to make it one of Victoria’s prestige theme parks.

Gumbuya Park, now called Gumbuya World, opened its doors after closing in the middle to the year to start work on stage one of the redevelopment.

The first stage of the $50 million plan to create the “Disneyland of Victoria” includes the Oasis Springs water park, which includes a 180m ‘dark slide’ and an interactive jungle gym with giant water bucket, wildlife trail with koalas and dingos, and the Oz Adventure and Outback Explorer worlds, which include roller coasters and an “outback pirate ship”.

The new rides will be a far cry from the old toboggan slide, water slide, paddle boats, and dune buggies of the former park. More work will be done throughout 2018.

A group of entrepreneurs including Gerry Ryan, Wal Pisciotta, Adam Campbell, Brett Murray, and Ray and Ron Weinzierl acquired the park for $4.65 million in September 2016.

The old park was known for its giant golden pheasant statue after it was converted from a pheasant farm to a wildlife park in 1978 by the Italian migrant businessman, Ron Rado.

The number of staff at the park will jump from 56 to more than 500 when the work is complete.

Gumbuya World is at 2705 Princes Highway, Tynong North. Tickets, which include unlimited park access, are $49 for those 16 and over, $43 for seniors and children aged 3-15, and kids under 3 free.
