A SNEAKY snake is giving Langwarrin locals a regular scare, playing peek-a-boo from his hidey-hole under a bridge.

The shifty red-bellied black snake is startling Pindara Estate residents daily, popping up from a gap in the bridge into the estate as pedestrians cross.

SNAKE SEASON VICTORIA: HOW TO STAY SAFE FROM SNAKES

Barry Goldsmith from Snake Catcher Victoria said he received calls every day from Langwarrin residents about the reptile, but had decided to leave him where he was.

“I went there yesterday and put some signs up — it’s not a dangerous snake,” Mr Goldsmith said.

“I’ve decided to leave that guy there, he’s not hurting anybody.

“People ring me every day about it, but it’s up to the council to ring me about it if they want it removed. He’s quite happy to stay there. He’s a cutie.”

Mr Goldsmith said the slippery snake, who he’d nicknamed Popeye, was “just curious” about his surroundings, and he encouraged people to leave him be.

“That’s where he lives, that’s where he’s supposed to be. People can call me if there’s a snake in their bathroom, or laundry. But it seems a bit silly to take a snake from its home.”

Mr Goldsmith said there had been no recorded deaths from red-bellied black snakes, and added they actually preyed on other snakes.

“If you see them, they are your friends, they keep tiger snakes away. They much prefer to get away from you than attack you.

“As long as people give it a wide berth there won’t be any problems.”
