A boozed-up brute threatened to kill his wife with a knife because she wouldn’t give him money to buy more grog, a court has heard.

Prit Singh was drunk when he told his partner he was going to cut her throat in a fight over finances.

The 44-year-old Clyde North chemical engineer is a self-confessed alcoholic with PTSD issues stemming from a home invasion where he was tied up and bashed.

He pleaded guilty to threat to kill and breach charges at the online Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The court heard Singh had consumed at least half a bottle of whisky on December 2 last year when he began to argue with his partner.

He demanded cash to get more booze, but she refused.

He approached her armed with a knife and said “it won’t take me long to cut your throat” before she managed to flee.

When he was later arrested Singh said he “had a problem with drinking” but couldn’t remember the details of the threat.

Despite being on strict bail conditions not to reattend the house in March he went back there in a drunken state.

Police came and he was taken to hospital due to being “significantly intoxicated” and remanded in custody.

Singh, originally from Fiji, came to Australia in 2016 after spending several years in New Zealand.

When living there he and his wife were subjected to a horrific incident whereby a group of men came into their home, tied them up, bashed him and robbed them.

Singh spent a month in hospital after the attack, couldn’t work for a while and began to drink.

His defence lawyer said at the end of last year Singh changed employers and had a workplace accident where he fell and broke his ribs.

As he was on probation at the time he lost his job and hit the bottle hard.

He said his client knows he has to confront his alcohol problem and the 33 days he had spent on remand had given him clear insight into what he had to do.

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said his drinking issue was a real concern.

“He gets very drunk, very disinhibited and commits crimes,” Mr Lethbridge said.

Singh was remanded in custody for a community corrections order assessment and will be sentenced on April 27.
