A woman has been shot by police after she allegedly pointed a gun at her partner’s head, following a horrific carjacking in Noble Park.

The 29-year-old, along with a 27-year-old man, is accused of forcing a man from his car as he got home from work about 5pm Thursday.

The dad — whose wife and six-month-old baby were just metres away inside their home — spotted a bulge in the man’s shirt that he believed was a gun and called the cops.

The pair allegedly took off at high speeds in the Ford Fairmont, going on a spree through Melbourne’s suburbs with the woman allegedly pointing the black handgun at other cars and a pedestrian.

The car was also allegedly seen speeding while driving against the traffic.

A police chase ensued, involving the airwing, and the car was stopped on Police Rd in Mulgrave about 6am Friday.

In a press conference, Acting Commander Damien Jackson said police were forced to pull their weapons when the woman allegedly pointed the gun at the male driver.

A leading police officer then took “decisive action” and shot two rounds of bullets through the windshield of the stolen Ford Fairmont, hitting the woman in the upper body and causing non-life-threatening injuries, Commander Jackson said.

The woman remains under police guard in hospital.

The man, from Noble Park, was also arrested at the scene but appeared to be drug affected and is yet to be questioned.

Commander Jackson said the community members who witnessed the gun being pointed at them while driving would have been “really scared”.

He said investigations were underway, but as of 11am Friday police were unsure how many other incidents may have occurred during the night.

“We’re appealing for people to come forward and provide information if they may have seen the vehicle ... or any carjacking,” he said.

The shooting is the second in a week after freed immigration detainee Masi Ayiik was shot in his armpit after he allegedly ran at an officer with a metal police outside a Doveton home on Saturday March 29.

“No police member wants to come to work and have to either draw or use their firearm,” Commander Jackson said.

“We’re making sure the members involved in both incidents are getting appropriate welfare.”

It’s not known whether the pair, who were known to police, were on bail at the time or whether the gun was registered.

An investigation has begun into the shooting, as is standard when police fire their weapons.

Anyone with information was urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
